Traditional Irish Music

In honor of st. paddy's day...

I like traditional irish music. I picked up a few good CDs when I was in Ireland a few years back. I love this one CD called "Jump at the Sun" by a band called the Barleyshakes. Anyone have any good traditional irish suggestions?

    With the obvious exception of the Pogues, the most important traditional Irish folk band are The Clancy Brothers. Their stuff with Tommy Makem is stunning. Beautiful songs of life, drinking and death.

    Other than Newfie bands, The Real McKenzies, Ashley MacIsaac, The Tossers, Flogging Molly, The Swaggerin' Growlers, and Spirit of the West are all good.

    I think the Real McKenzies are Scottish Canadian, not Irish.

    Yeah, I know. They don't play traditional music, either, I probably should've said that. They are very punky, like the Dropkick Murphys. None of the artists I listed are actually Irish, but if you like traditional Irish music, I think you'd like them.

    Altan is a great band from Ireland. Get the Island Angel album and go from there.
    The first Planxty album is a classic.
    The Chieftains are worth a listen.

    I haven't listened to much traditional Irish folk music, but I still have a deep appreciation for the folk music that inspired and morphed into American folk and bluegrass.
    There are some really good acts out there right now that have taken traditional folk styles and contemporised them in various ways.

    Greensky Bluegrass
    Billy Strings
    Mandolin Orange
