Jane's Addiction

This band gets little to no credit on this board. I see threads on a daily basis discussing bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers but in my opinion Jane's Addiction's two studio albums Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual have more energy and more creativity than anything any of those bands ever created. Perry Ferrell's lyrics are more encompassing than even our beloved Eddie Vedder's. Just listen to Three Days, Jane Says, Summertime Rolls or Ocean Size. The man paints a very vivid picture with words. Eric Avery's basslines carry Perry's vocals very well (see Ted, Just Admit it..) and Dave Navarro can fucking shred guitar solos (see Ocean Size). Jane's Addiction created the Alternative scene in LA in the late 80s that paved the way for the rise of Alternative music. Then after they created the scene they created the festival (Lolla) to represent the scene. Let's hear some love for a band that is among the most unique and original in music history.

Nothing's Shocking is one of my all time favourite albums, saw them live twice and they were absolutely phenonemal live, you have got Strays as well right?

Obviously not from the "classic" era but a very good album too

love Jane's. "Slow Divers" from Kettle's Whistle is one of my favorite songs. i also came across a studio cover of the Greatful Dead's "Ripple" on some tribute my friend had.. not great, but worth mentioning.

their "LA Medly" on the Classic Girl single is also worth checking out. shoulda went to see them on the Relapse tour in 97 but i'm a loser...

thought Strays was just.. meh.

One of the most unbelievable concerts I have ever seen. Those guys kicked so much ass live!!!

"Ocean Size" is probably my favorite song, and yes I do enjoy the album Strays also.

You can pick good and bad examples of both Perry's and Ed's lyrics for this argument. Whores may not be a good example of Perry's lyrical ability but you cleverly chose to not mention ANY of the songs I listed in the original post. Ed's lyrics aren't always great or encompassing either: "Drop the leash - Get outta my fucking face!" is not Ed's best work or really representative of his body of work. Ditto Perry & Whores.

Perry's voice kind of gets in the way of me enjoying the music. Especially on Jane Says, I just wish I was deaf. Its a shame, because I enjoy some of the actual music.

I just love arguing with people who point out one small thing and use that as an absolute. I've heard people say "A mole. digging in a hole, digging up my soul??'--God, Bono is a bad songwriter." So dozens of complex songs are thrown out by one that isn't as thought-provoking?

Its not even like the 'Whores" line is bad writing. Sometimes the context of what the writer wants to say isn't as involved as other times. That doesn't make that particular song 'bad.'

Now, Jon Bon Jovi saying "I hijacked a rainbow and crashed it into a pot of gold" is another story.

BTW, I'll say it again, Janes Addiction rules.

Perry solo. Psi Com. Porno For Pyros. Jane's Addiction.

Love'em all, and for all different reasons.

It was sad when Eric Avery left Jane's. He was a huge part of their sound. It was nice to see Flea on the Relapse tour, but it wasn't the same. It was crazy to see how strung out they all were on the Three Days dvd during the tour.. well maybe aside from Perkins. He seems to be pretty mellow all the time.

Anyways, here's a good live show from 02-20-89 Philadelphia, PA, Theater of Living Arts. Nice quality, not bad setlist.

One of my very favorite bands. Strays was okay, some really good tunes, but not essential in my opinion. Beacuse of that I was thinking that Perry was getting a little too long in the tooth. However, I heard some clips of some Satelite Party songs and they sound awesome! I'm actually excited for this album to come out. I especially want to hear the song with the new Jim Morrison spoken word bit.

Props for Eric, he was indeed a big part of JA. He's done some amazing stuff since then including the Deconstruction cd with Dave Navarro and a few releases with Polarbear. He gave Alanis Morissette some new blood and kicked ass with Garbage on their last tour. According to a good friend who knows him he's a totally sweet guy to boot!

I saw them for the first time at lolla the 1st one in 91 or 92 very fuzzy day. They kill nothing shocking, and Live at Kettle Whistle get heavy rotation on my mp3.

One of my all-time favorite bands. I've seen them I think 4 times, and their discs are always in my heavy rotation.

If you can find the "Live & Rare" CD, buy it.

One of my all time favorite bands, too. I listened to Nothing's Shocking just about every day during my senior year of high school. Three Days is one of the greatest rock epics ever written.

I like Strays, but I agree there is something missing from it compared to the classic stuff. That something is one of my favorite bass players, Eric Avery. His simple but powerful bass lines brought such a great groove to the songs. They were really the foundation of most of their best songs. Dave Navarro played his ass off on those albums, too.

XXX\Jane's Addiction would be one of my Deserted Island albums, for sure.

I think it is testament to their ability to inspire awe that Jeff and Stone have admitted that being in Green River and opening for Jane's was a great part of what drove them to want to be in a band of equal QUALITY and ethereal presence as the mighty and hugely influential jane's ...

oceansize is a soundtrack for the life of the modern romantic,
and so many of their songs make you want to just get off your ass and go do something profound!

here is mad props for Perry and the boys.

want to say that PFPs Good Gods:\\Urge is one of the better albums ever made. The background noises and natural sounds, the instrument voicings and production on that album are just other worldy, even if some of the songs leave a little to be desired ...
