cat in the hat? not anymore

tonight was a special night - for the 2,000 fans who were at the shepherds bush empire, london. no, not because u2 made a surprise appearance and played one, covered bob marley's one love and jammed that new hit single.
but this was the first night i saw that artist formerly known as cat stevens played live. the first time i heard don't be shy, where the childrens play, miles from nowhere, the wind, wild world, father and son, and peace train sang by the original artist himself with his guitar. everyone remembers their first night. especially when the reality turns out to be more beautiful than the dream.
i said first night because i am hopeful there will be more nights to come. this was not an invitation-only show. this was a show for the 2,000 fans who had been waiting for 30 years. and that included bono. when cat came on stage, bono introduced him as the best songwriter he'd ever known. one of the things we, the 2,000 fans, would agree with bono - this show was the proof.
tonight, the cat was definitely out of the hat. just call him a roadsinger now.

played many from his back catalogue - opened with 'oh very young' and played a couple of rare: 'portobello road' and 'blackness of the night'.
told the story of how the harold and maude director approached him to write more than one song before he played 'don't be shy'.
highlight of the night was when he sat at the coffee table storytelling about his journey with only alun davies playing the guitar, and sang 'the wind'.
the songs he played from his new album - thinking bout you, all kinds of roses and roadsinger - didn't sound like the man was away for 30 years. closed the show with another new song, 'welcome home'.
yes, yusuf. welcome home.
p/s: the show will be broadcast on bbc radio 2 on saturday, 6 june at 10pm.
