Great band.
I wish Nico did at least one more album with them but then again I think the sound of their debut accommodated her unique vocal style more than the follow up albums would have.

  • If i ever make a movie (not very likely) there is definitely going to be at least two scenes that involve VU songs -- Train Round The Bend and Oh Sweet Nothin' (tracks 9 & 10 on Loaded). The first for a scene involving some highly intoxicated fast night driving on the California coastal highway involving a pair of lovers, and the second for a scene involving the death of the girl.

    That was weird, huh?
I do that a lot with music,
think about it so much that it becomes like a scene in a movie.

The VU were an amazing band, and the tunes still hold up.
I just included the Lou Reed "solo" version of "I'll Be Your Mirror" (available on NYC Man) on a mix tape for my girl. The immediacy and intimacy of that version is so splendid.

As a huge nico fan, you should check that out just to hear what Lou could do without the bombshell blonde bimbo backing him. (no offense to nico, i just like alliteration) ;)

lou is one of my all time favorites. i could take or leave the stuff with nico though. shes kinda horrible, she sings like a robot. the live version of lou singing i'll be your mirror on the box set craps all over nico's studio version.

loaded is probably my favorite album of theirs, but the s/t album is pretty good too. pale blue eyes is one of those songs that is just untouchable in some divine way. i wish there was more live stuff of theirs floating around that is decent quailty.
  • i wish there was more live stuff of theirs floating around that is decent quailty.

i have some good stuff that i scored from back in the Oink days and such.
(still really pissed that i got half way through a GIANT janes addiction bootleg torrent and then Oink "died")
Not a huge treasure chest or anything, but there may be SOMEthing that you don't have:

    '69 VU Live (Vol. 1 & 2)
    At the Warhol Museum
Flowers of Evil (disc 2 only with some ommissions, disc 1 & some tracks on Max's Kansas City)
    Le Bataclan '72
Live '68 (5 songs from 3 dates at La Cave in Cleveland, OH)
Live at Max's Kansas City (officially available)
    Lost Live Tapes 1969
    The VU Demo Acetate
Wild Side of the Street (Italy, 1990)

    anyway,
    that's all i've got.
You've probably got the same ones. If not, i can U\L 4 U.
If you got OTHER ones, let me know.
    ;)

The third album (S/T) is a masterpiece to me. The other three are great but that one really gets me.

I've not yet heard Lou Reed singing I'll be your mirror.
I always thought that song would sound awesome as a punk cover.

Who loves the sun and Sweet Jane, perfect songs.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone always nuts about the VU & Nico, and even White Light/White Heat to an extent, but their 3rd self-titled album is one of my favorite albums ever. Like someone said before, Pale Blue Eyes is just a perfect song. I was hooked as soon as I heard Candy Says open the album, followed by the amazing What Goes On.....and I even dig the trippy Murder Mystery. And Beginning to See the Light??? Ridiculously good.

Did you ever see the tape/dvd called Songs for Drella? Lou Reed and John Cale's performance about Andy Warhol. I think it is great.

Regarding the self titled third album...
    The song 'Jesus'...
    I don't get it???
    What is it all about?
I mean..Lou and the band were/are not religious? Let alone Catholic?
It sorta feels out of place but the music is nice.

im pretty sure he's jewish, or was. i know there is some story back in the 70's when he stormed off stage cause the fans were calling him a jew and all. but that doesnt make much sense for that song though, jews dont worship jesus...

Yeah he was born into a Jewish family, I don't think he practices.
And yeah to what you said.
The song's meaning is a mystery I want revealed!

    Another note...
Love the Lou Reed sung "I'll be your mirror" from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969:_The_ ... round_Live

Does anybody know of any other live versions of this song sung by Lou on CD?
Wish the sound on the Live album was clearer.

Beautiful song and I want to learn it on guitar!

All live VU albums have bad sound. There were some fantastic sounding pro-recorded shows but the guy who owns the tapes is hoarding them.

to me the song seems to be about feeling small/lost in a big city.

But what's wrong about an artist expressing their spirituality in an album?

oh, well why do you think it's out of place then if the religion aspect wasn't bothering you?

    It doesn't bother me.
I am just curious about it that is all.
For someone that isn't religious let alone born into a Catholic faith it just puzzles me that the song was even written by Lou, that's all.
