What Do You Think About The Dead

What do you think about The Grateful Dead. With or without Gerry....

Are you a fan? Have you ever attended a show?

I went to see them with the Allman Brothers at the Gorge yesterday and have to admit, I like the standards. The songs that have a beginning, middle and ending. I'm not the biggest fan of their long winded jams, as yesterday they performed something late in the night that sounded like music for a horror film soundtrack...which made me feel eeky..... If your dancing and the bottom drops out and then you just have to stand there, I get restless. I appreciate the musical improv of it all, but it's not my cup of tea.

.... but they're all excellent musicians, especially Mickey Hart. That man had drums so big, I'm sure they woke the Gods. You could hear them echo off the canyon and the columbia river. His solo was the best part for me.

The crowds at a Dead show are still very nice to be in. (Especially since I have a problem with crowds of people) The variety of people at the show, especially children and families made it feel softer somehow.

I know a lot of people use mushrooms and the like and that's why the crowd is so mellow, but my trip came as a two year old little girl dancing around me. I wonder what children have that makes them seem like they are tripping on the best drug in the world? Maybe it's pure innocence. Maybe it's because they are so new to the world? How I wish they could bottle that. What does that have to do with the Grateful Dead? Well, it just seemed like the child understood the music better than I.

The only other crowd I feel safe in, is of course Pearl Jam fans. Although, the only families you tend to see are those of the band. :D

Any thoughts about The Dead?

I saw them at the forum last week and it was amazing. the jams can get a little long and almost lost at times but, man, them and the fans make everything worth it. That Denver show sounds amazing btw!
I’ve seen Pearl Jam 25 times, Eddie Vedder 9 times, and Brad once.

I've seen The Dead four or five times.

Saw them with Jerry in 1993.
Ratdog the night Jerry died at the Hampton Beach Casino.
    Phil Lesh and Friends.
    Mickey Hart Drums.
The Dead this month at the Forum.

And probably one other time, but I can't recall.

I'm a very casual fan, and though I love a lot of the songs that get played, I get bored and tired when they do some boring slow meandering jam.

I'm a huge Phish fan and don't really get bored at those shows at all.

So I don't know what the difference is.

If I get to a show I know it will be 50% kick ass and 50% sitting down chilling out. Which is fine, but I prefer to Rock out the whole time if possible.

Oh yeah, Mickey is great. Seen his solo projects going back to the original planet drum tour. The only one I didn't see live was the Mystery Box band (which is a great disc if you haven't heard it). Love seeing Mickey live. Last time was in a small (500 seat) theater in San Diego.

As far as the Dead, it's definitely a different story without Jerry. I saw them on the original reunion tour, and while it was fun, it wasn't the Grateful Dead. Jerry's licks and fills were one of a kind. Even with Jerry though, I never enjoyed the shows as much as after Brent OD'd (although the Hornsby shows were good). He really played well with Jerry.

Skipped this tour. $100 tickets and seating on the floor (not to mention the "VIP" packages) was enough to make me pass.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Love the Dead...saw the first time in '91 at Buckeye Lake near Columbus Ohio. Was one of the best experiences of my life, seriously. After that I made the trek to see them anytime they played the tri-state area. Started trading live shows with folks, something I never considered doing with any other band before. Nowadays, i listen to more live music than studio recordings...I was really glad when PJ started offering up their live shows. Anyway, After Jerry died I would still go see the remains of the dead (Phil & friends, Ratdog, the Other ones). Was still a good time but It wasn't the same & neither was the fanbase. The '94 shows felt alot like a Dave Matthews show, no offense intended to Dave personally but his fans suck. I was unable to check them out this tour, mainly because I've spent most of my money on PJ/EV tickets & another band I adore (the Avett Brothers) but have had many reports back from friends that went saying great things.

My first Dead show was in Ohio '91 as well, but not at Buckeye, can't remember the name :? but did see the Dead at Buckeye in the early '90's. We saw the last two shows in Chicago in '95 when the whole "scene" seemed to be changing. Continued to see the Other Ones, Rat Dog , etc. The last time was Vernon, NY with Willy Nelson the night after PJ last played the Molsen Amp. in 2003. We did PJ then the "Dead" back to back". The Buzzcocks one night and Willy and the Dead the next night  Had a great time. The Dead don't come too close to Ontario anymore, used to see them in Ohio and went as far as Florida one year. I miss those days but I LOVE Pearl Jam concerts more now, but would still like to see the Dead again.

    Peace!
    Peace,

LOVE THE GRATEFUL "GOD DAMN" DEAD

saw the show in Buffalo, had seen RATDOG a couple times before but havin BOB/PHIL/MICKEY/BILL
all together jammin it out was classic.......then there was WARREN who lit it up. .

the BUFF show had a good vibe but far too much NITRUS on seen i have never seen this before being from CANADA. it was the weirdest shit i have ever seen....but for the music it was tight Bobby sounds a little weathered at times but then Warren comes in a pick'sem up.
HIGHLIGHTS- They Love Each Other/Loser/Me & Bobby McGee/Loose Lucy/Ramble on Rose
Closed the show with TRUCKIN a fitting way to end the show " WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT BEEN"

i'v seen on the setlists this tour they almost ended up playin every tune they have ever written,an jerry solo's
even played the bulk of the PIGPEN tunes which warren sang awesome

one trax they didn't play this tour, would have loved to hear THE STRANGER(TWO SOULS IN COMMUNION)

i apoligize for ramblin you can tell the refer really treated me good today after work lol. so there is my 2 cents on one of my fav bands

    LONG LIVE THE DEAD

I saw Grateful Dead 169 times from 1988 to 1995.
    The Other Ones 4 times
    The Dead once
    Phil and Friends 2 times
    Jerry Garcia Band 2 times
    Ratdog @ least 5 to 6 times
Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman at least 3 or 4 times.

I listen to internet archive.com almost every day while I work, I'm listening to 1/10/1978 right now as I type this, when I saw The Other Ones in San Francisco in December of 2002 and it was just as good as any Grateful Dead show from the late 1990's. Consider it a privilege that you were able to see the remaining member play live, sure I saw a lot of average and crappy Grateful Dead shows, but the ones that were great were sometimes so surreal it was amazing, that people can make music like that and NO I WASN'T high on acid or other stuff at EVERY show, I saw some of the best shows stone cold sober.

The main reasons I love Grateful Dead so much are one, they are really about 5 or 6 Grateful Dead's, all from different time periods, the 1968 to 1971 band, 1972 to about 1975, 1976 to 1979, the 80's up till about 1988, 1989 to 1991 when they played some of their best later period shows IMO and from 1992 to 1995. All different bands basically.

You could go to a Grateful Dead show and hear, blue grass, country, Dylan, Chuck Berry, jazz and just plain old Grateful Dead, there never was nor NEVER will be a band like them, not Phish not Pearl Jam not anyone, they were to me anyway the best American rock and roll band. They gave to the fans and we gave to them, there was a saying, "There's nothing like a Grateful Dead show" and it's true. Bill Graham once said, "they aren't the best at what they do, they're the only band that does what they do." So yes consider yourself lucky that you got to see them and The Allman Brothers as they truly are rock and roll legends in the biggest sense of the word.

I used to crack up at the old joke, What did the Deadhead say when the acid wore off at the show??? Man this music really sucks!

I used to love that joke because people really thought that, whenever I would see a great show I would walk out of the venue with a big smirk on my face as if the rest of the crowd and I knew some secret that the rest of the world didn't know about. Oh I long for those days again, they will come again in another life, or at least I can hope they will......we miss you Jerry

May the four winds blow you safely home.......

    yes
    dead fan here
many many east coast shows between 1982 and 1993, solo acoustic Jerry, many JGB shows and lots of ratdog.

I was lucky enough to see the MSG and sat spectrum shows this tour and they were much better than I thought they would be
no question, the old vibe was in the air both times and the band delivered
I only hope they keep it up as they are just hitting a groove!

i saw the grateful dead w/jerry about 150 times! saw some awesome shows and saw some ok shows. i even traveled to europe in 1990 to see them in paris and london (werewolves of london on halloween!). i've seen ratdog and phil & friends and the other ones a few times (i need a dose of dead every now and then). i went to the family reunion shows at alpine valley in 2002. those were awesome shows!!! had to pass up the shows this time, instead i went to l.a. to support the meat puppets on may 11 & 12. i really liked the dead when bruce hornsby was playing with them. my favorite run of shows w/hornsby was the august 16-18,1991 at shoreline! awesome setlists! PEACE-OUT!

Well I've never been a huge Dead fan by any means but saw Phil Leash and Friends at Rothbury last yr and had the night of my life!!! I had such a great time..however the set was a festival setlist and one full of hits which was great for a casual fan like myself.

I'm a huge Warren Haynes fan and went to see The Dead this tour in Buffalo and loved it! The only thing that I was upset with was the crowd was talking the entire show! We were 9th row on the flr and even during Phils donor speach I had a hard time hearing him. It was strange as the crowd seemed to love the show and were excited at the begining of every tune but yet talked thru out the entire show. My dad was at the Chicago shows and I guess the talking was really bad during the acoustic set...I don't know I just think the crowd should shut up and just listen to the music...but I still had a great time!

Looking forward to seeing them at Rothbury this yr!!! I think I'll grow to appreciate The Dead the more I listen to them ..but for now I'm a greatest hits Dead fan..just can't get into any Jerry Garcia Band or really any Dead without Warren...yet...but give me 10 more yrs and we'll see...I'm coming around...slowly.

I'm not sure how many concerts you have been to recently, but the talking during the show is not just at The Dead shows, it's at EVERY show, and it's gotten WAY worse the last few years, I was at an Alejandro Escovedo show in November and had to ask a couple behind me if they could keep it down, I was at the Arc Angels show during SXSW here in Austin and it took me over 20 mins. to find a spot where people weren't talking the whole time.

ACL Fest is THE WORST, I NEVER have understood this, if you want to talk, go to the back of the show or stay home and listen to your stereo. People have NO concert etiquette at all these days and it's not just the talking, no has any respect for peoples space also. Here's a hint, if you come stand right in front of me at a festival or concert that is in a filed like ACL, I more than likely can't see now, because you came and stood RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME and now you are also talking the whole time, so now I can't see OR hear anything!

  • Just a trivial/possible myth side note.

Last show Jerry ever played with the Dead - Soldier field.

Band to play the following night - Pearl Jam

PJ actually used the dead's equipment for that show (or so the story goes).

That's why I love seeing music outdoors because you can sit on the lawn and relax, take in the environment. If kids are playing on the lawn or people are talking the music is loud enough that you just don't care.

The Gorge is one of those places as well as Deer Creek in Indiana. I always loved Pearl Jam on the lawn. Laying back, being amazed by the stars and moon. Watching the band on the big screen.

There are those that talk, and those that listen. How inconsiderate of your neighbors and how unappreciative one must be to have floor seats and gab during the show. To each his own I guess.
