Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers

The new album's out on Monday.

From what I've heard of it so far, it's very much back to basics for the Manics.
It's got the passion & anger of Generation Terrorists, the darkness & imagery of Holy Bible, but all held together by the solid song craft of Everything must Go.

The band are using old lyrics written by Richey James Edwards before his disappearance 15 years ago.

Even as a fan I admit they lost their way a bit with Know Your Enemy & Lifeblood. But I think they were back to for with their last effort Send Away The Tigers.

I'm going to see them play on the 26th on this month. Aparently it's a two set show. The first set is the new album being played in it's entirety. With the back calagogue being brought out in the second set.

Really enjoying the album so far.

Richey lyrics are great as one would expect. But it's not the full on 'Holy Bible II' that many anticipated.
Whereas The Holy Bible was dark & posed difficult questions, this album at least offers some hope.

Really looking forward to the show next week now!!

Giving it a first spin now, not liking it too much.

Though this track - track 5 reminded me of Spirit of the radio by Rush.

Whats so good about it, it has an annoying vocal harmony.

Is there even a solo in this album.... Tigers > Journal!

I don't think this album is even being released in N.A.

    It's insanely catchy

And I love guitar solos too but they are not everything.

Yeah but James plays awesome ones and they lead to wonderful things.

I'd just like to make that distinction for myself, is all. *sigh*

I'm kind of a rare bird in the Manics fan universe ... I loved Lifeblood, but don't figure EMG to be as awesome as most MSP fans do. Odds are, I'll probably like it if most fans don't.

I've heard that some supermarket chains in the UK have banned the record due to its cover ... ?!?!

I also like lifeblood. What I like about it is that to my ears the band sounded comfortable and playing what they wanted to play. The previous album I think tried too hard to write songs in the style that people wanted and wasn't particularly good.

Journal has been getting really good reviews and very positive feedback from fans, just not on this board :)

I'm liking it more with each listen. It is an album very much by the band that wrote The Holy Bible but is also by the band that wrote Lifeblood and that in my opinion is a good thing.

Nicky sings the closing track on the album. Sadly is voice is really bad. I understand why he sang it as they thought James' voice would be too sweet for the song but Nicky really can't sing. Not in the way that some people would say Kurt or Hendrix can't sing, because they could. Nicky has an awful voice. I don't think though it detracts as much from the song as I may be making it sound but I'd still of preferred he hadn't sung the song.

As for the cover, it is because they think the cover looks like a beaten child, which it is not. As either Nicky or James pointed out it is fine for supermarkets to display covers with women looking like whores with their tits almost hanging out.

Finally regarding solos, I was also surprised how few there are especially given that this was seen as a follow up to the holy bible which had great leads. I hear that the hidden track bag lady has a good solo though. For some stupid reason if you buy the more expensive 2 CD version of the album, which I did, it doesn't contain the hidden track so I haven't seen it.

Yeh i need to give it more spins.

And yes supermarkets have banned the cover

    taken from wikipedia

"The top four UK supermarkets are stocking the CD in a plain slipcase, as the cover has been deemed "inappropriate". Bradfield regards the decision as "utterly bizarre" and has commented: "You can have lovely shiny buttocks and guns everywhere in the supermarket on covers of magazines and CDs, but you show a piece of art and people just freak out."[22]"

There is much more to James Dean Bradfield's guitar playing than solos, he's extremely versatile. In fact, he is the best British rock guitarist of his generation and he is on fire on this album. Keep playing it, it gets better with every listen.
If I knew where it was, I would take you there...

I'm loving the album more with each listen, finding new little bits I'd missed previously.

Always loved James as a musician/guitarist. Always blown away by his acoustic version of 'This Is Yesterday'. Awesome.

I'm seeing them next Tuesday night, should be a great show. 'Journal...' being played whole, before the back catalogue comes out!

Damn me for being Canadian! I had to order the signed deluxe online, so here I am waiting (impatiently) for it, hoping they don't send it by rowboat

I did just notice that "Tigers" was released in NA 11 weeks later than in the UK, so for those of you unwilling to shell out the GBP online can probably pick this up on our side of the Atlantic come late-July/early-August. If the past is any indication, that is; maybe with all the current publicity, it'll come together sooner.

I'll be seeing them for the 28th time on the 30th. I'm old. But apart from their return to the Astoria in 2007, this is as excited as I've been about seeing them since they were a four-piece. I'm loving the fact that the Journal For Plague Lovers set will be played without any backing musicians.

Quality album imo. Peeled Apples blew me away the first time I heard it. Heaviest stuff since masses against the classes single.

    Standout tracks for me are:

    Peeled Apples
    Marlon J.D.
    All Is Vanity
    Bag Lady

I've still yet to hear an album by this band that I wasn't impressed with. Know Your Enemy was a let down but any album that has Found That Soul can't be bad. Top effort from the lads

Which site did you order it from? Amazon.ca has a few marketplace sellers but I'd like to know about as many options as possible before I order it. I think I'm just going to get the regular version.
