So, regretfully, I have just recently gotten into Neil Young. Before this I have only heard his Greatest hits and the Heart of Gold DVD (which I find astounding by the way). I am thinking of getting the Massey Hall album but don't know any of the songs. Just wondering if it is on par with Heart of Gold, better or worse. I can't imagine it will be worse but I don't want to waste my $$ on something I might not like. Any advice from all you Young Neil fans out there.

If you've heard his hits, you should recognize some of the songs on MH. If you're into vinyl it's definitive even if you're only a moderate NY fan like myself.

Yeah!!! Well factor in pee breaks, coffee breaks and the fact that I only could afford minimum coverage insurance so I won't be driving crazy... And I might be doing it in 10hrs :P. Hmmm what Neil tunes should I listen to on my trek!?

Quick Question: Are you getting it because of the DVD that comes with it thinking it will be a DVD like Heart of Gold?
If so do not. The DVD that accompanies Massey Hall is no where near as great as heart of gold. The songs on the CD are great and worth having.

That said my go to for a new neil young fan is the album that hooked me: Live Rust
Why Live Rust.. well i has great versions of every song and it has cortez the killer.
If you are really only familar with greatest hits and the heart of gold DVD i guess that means you have not heard Cortez the Killer :o

Be prepared to become Neil Young Addict after you hear that lovely version on Live Rust. Plus the version of Like a Hurricane on there rips too.

My vote is Live Rust. Then you'll want to buy everything you can by him.

hint hint.... "on the beach" is a brooding masterpiece.

Yup EXACTLY my story. I listened to harvest moon a few times like ages ago, thena year or so after got live rust and spammed it, not sure if there is a bad song on there. Even though its ace i'm now trying to move onto other albums like freedom, zuma, ragged glory, on the beach and his 70s stuff.

Actually, I was thinking about getting it on vinyl. I was blown away by the quality and listenability of the songs on Heart of Gold. I have always liked Neil Young, just never really listened to him with an open mind. I figured if all those songs were great, he's probably as good as everyone says he is. Saw the reviews on Amazon for live at Massey Hall and not a single bad review. I kind of wanted to expand my listening of his music and thought this would be a good place to start. just wanted to get a feel for what people on here thought. The votes are in and I'm gonna go for it. I have a feeling this is only the beginning.

It sounds fantasmonious on vinyl. Just listened to it again, since my first post and there is a good mix of well known NY and some stuff I still don't really know the name of.

    I love Dance Dance Dance

Yeah so many good albums. Neil is odd you can not like him or just think he is okay then he turns a lyric in a song with a wonderful simple chord progression that grabs you like a meat hook. It just digs into you and makes sense. Then you can't get enough of him. I still remember the moment i neil hooked me. I was a teenager and between cortez the killer and old man my addiction began.

this was my second neil young album that i bought. The first was everybody knows this is nowhere. I'd also seen the heart of gold dvd and that's what got me to buy "eveybondy knows." It's a great album...tons of songs and great selection of his early stuff. this was only 2 years ago and i've got 8 vinyls and 10 albums so it's fair to say that it didn't turn me away from him.
