Thanks for all the info guys, been very helpful.

I downloaded The Slip the other day, and have to say I really like it.

I prefer the more straight forward rock type songs than the ambient instumental stuff though, so where should I go next? With Teeth perhaps?

Got a feeling I may delve deeper into the band eventually.

    Thanks again.

Well if you prefer the more straight forward rock stuff, then Broken should be your next stop. It will punch you in the face, turn you around, pull your panties down, and slap the shit out of your ass!!

Actually, it's just a really rockin' aggressive EP ;)

The best album is probably 'The Fragile'.

'The Downward Spiral' is another I would strongly recommend.

From the recent stuff, 'With Teeth' is my favourite.

'Pretty Hate Machine' is a good place to start though.

Oh, and they're excellent live.... ;)

I'm looking to trade a spare NIN standing ticket in Manchester for a PJ standing ticket in london. I am willing to make up for the price in cash.

    TO the original poster:

This is NIN final tour for some time so it is a lot different than their normal shows. This will be a lot more like PJ show, not as much of a production as just music. Here is the setlist from last night, and the albums the songs are off:

Now I'm Nothing (Non Album intro track)
    Terrible Lie (Pretty Hate Machine)
    Sin (Pretty Hate Machine)
March Of The Pigs (The Downward Spiral)
    Piggy (The Downward Spiral)
    The Frail (The Fragile)
    The Wretched (The Fragile)
    Discipline (The Slip)
    Head Down (The Slip)
    La Mer (The Fragile)
    The Good Soldier (Year Zero)
I Do Not Want This (The Downward Spiral)
The Downward Spiral (The Downward Spiral)
Non Entity (Non Album, on free sampler www.ninja2009.com
Lights In The Sky (The Slip)
    Wish (Broken)
    Physical (Broken)
The Hand That Feeds (With Teeth)
Head Like A Hole (Pretty Hate Machine)
    Hurt (The Downward Spiral)

It contains some staples and some rare stuff. You will hear Head Like a Hole and Hurt, other than that it is up in the air. They seem to play about 80% of the popular stuff and 20% rarites

march of the pigs and the frail/wretched have been on the last 2 tours too. plus wish i think was played at all the shows of the last 2-3 tours, if not every show since broken.

also some of the rare songs from that show havent been played since like 95, i do not want this is one of those tracks. and now im nothing was a pretty hate machine tour song so thats a super rare track.

March of the Pigs I forgot about. Frail/Wretched and Wish were both not played at the show I went to on in Nashville last year. That was the first NIN show I attended and it was simply amazing. It was more of a show than a total concert. It reminded me of seeing Pink Floyd, in that it was an audio and video extravaganza. I am really looking forward to seeing this show. I heard that SSSC and JA are both putting on good shows too.

    Hi guys.

Just bought tickets for the Nine Inch Nails/Jane's Addiction co-headline show in Manchester this July.
But, I've got to admit I'm going cause I wanna see Jane's Addiction!

I now Trent is highly respected & incredibly talented, but I've never really got into NIN.
I admit I haven't bought any of their albums, but from what little I've heard of them, it's not inspired me to dip into my pocket & puchase anything by them.

But, seeing as I've splashed out on the tickets, and they're gonna be performing - I may as well make the most of it & enjoy it as best I can!

So I thought I'd make an effort to listen to some of their stuff, to try & get aquainted so that maybe I'll enjoy the show a bit more.

    Any pointers??

The Fragile, probably not their best, but a nice two-disc sample.

NIN are the shit! Don't forget "Burn" off the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. What great single. Pretty Hate Machine, With Teeth and Broken are the most accessible albums. The Fragile is amazing. EPIC.
"Right Where It Belongs" completes With Teeth like "Hurt" completes The Downward Spiral. Love 'em.

Don't get me wrong, I love PHM (some of my favs....TL, DII, SICNH) but it sounds dated and even TR knows this and has stated thisin a recent interview. Just don't think it would be the way to sell someone on NIN right off the bat.

I was main floor for the first leg of the NIN tour this past year and you will not be disappointed in seeing them live....Trent did pull out all the "visual" toys and the band is solid...he has Josh Freese on drums (A Perfect Circle most recently) and Robin Finck on lead (Guns and Roses and from the NIN glory years). If u want to get an idea of how great Nails is as a live act, check out their performance from Woodstock....still ranks as one of the greatest live performances EVER!!! Listening wise, i'm old school so you can't go wrong with either Pretty Hate Machine or The Downward Spiral. But for pure raw energy and Nails at their purest, you have to check out Broken...have fun! Having Jane's open is just icing on the cake!

I agree with just about all of the above, except Josh Freese left the band after the Vegas show of the Lights in the Sky tour. Ilan Rubin is their current drummer (and he's very good too).

"the fragile" has to be your first! its their sprawling masterpiece! definitely my favorite... its to NIN what yield is to PJ or mellon collie is to SP... that album that falls in the middle of their career and just really encompasses what theyre all about... pretty accessible too for a newby

after that id go with "broken" (hard, early NIN stuff)... then probably "with teeth", "year zero", or "the slip" in any particular order (theyre all pretty accessible, straight on rock... in a similar way)... then "downward spiral"... if youre still not having it then check out the mellow "still" for trents soft side... "pretty hate machine" is obviously where it all started but its sounds a lil dated to me these days... still worth checking out though...

oh and get ghosts at some point in your exploration... just listen to the whole damn thing in one sitting and if youre still not sold then NIN is just not for you

    Particular songs:
    -wish
    -last
    -physical
    -piggy
    -the way out is through
    -where is everybody?
    -even deeper
    -the fragile
    -4 ghosts I
    -the great destroyer (modwheelmood remix)
    -something i can never have
    -discipline
    -only
    -getting smaller
    -the great destroyer
    -in this twilight

wow... narrowing that down was hard... nearly every song is a gem IMO

I've seen 4 shows this tour. Best tip....GET THERE EARLY. You definitely want to see Street Sweeper Social Club...and NIN hits the stage at about 8pm.

I had no problem with Jane's closing. Their performance/production is so much bigger than NIN's this tour. You will not be disappointed. Great line up.

I wish I were going to more shows.

I'd say get Pretty Hate Machine as that is definitely the easiest to get into and is very catchy.

I must admit I found it odd when I heard that JA was the closing act on the tour, but that is coming from a huge NIN fan and someone who doesn't care for JA at all. I would imagine that their fans are more than happy and probably annoyed about having to see NIN!

I was informed that NIN are closing in Europe? Not sure if this is true or not though.

Damn, glad I learned that! We were pondering heading out late as we're not terribly interested in seeing all of JA... that would've been bad! At least this way we can cut out early since I have class in the am and my gf has to catch a flight home.

another good thing to check for (if you havent already) is whether or not parking is included... not sure if its the same for every venue... i just realized that mine was earlier today and it ended up being free and convenient

JA is closing all the shows that are part of the NINJA tour, per Trent's request. He posted on a thread on the NIN forum as to why he wants them closing. Basically it is a respect thing.

Yep. That is the best one, but Downward Spiral is fucking sweet, too.

We got to our show at 730 and NIN was already playing. They only played about 70 minutes. It was kind of a letdown.

Holy shit... just got the deluxe edition of TDS and it's fucking mind-blowing! THIS is how you remaster and remix an album!

If only TVT or whoever could pull their heads out of their asses long enough to let Trent give PHM this kind of treatment!
