Oh yes... June 23rd. With their "most accessible" record just around the corner it'll be interesting to see if new fans jump on board or continue to write them off. PJ please bring this band out on the road... One of thee other greats live out there right now.

    Every album has gone farther and farther away from mainstream, so I think it's safe to say the average music fan will says it either sucks or they don't get the music.

    Me on the other hand listened to Bedlam a million times, so I'm really excited for it. I listened to El Grupo Nuevo de Omar last night and it didn't grab me right away. But I have a feeling Octahedron will be amazing whether it's as fast as Bedlam or trippy and slow as Frances.

    I can't wait to see them live again. They are by far the best band alive right now, live and on record :mrgreen:

    I'm definitely loving Cryptomnesia... Octahedron is supposedly largely acoustic and much more straightforward for TMV. Can't wait.
  • I love TMV but they would absolutely not be a good opener for PJ. yes, I know they are phenomenal live.
    {if (work != 0) {
    work = work + 1;
    sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
    else if (work >= 0) {
    reality.equals(false);
    work = work +1;
    }system("pause");
    return 0;}
  • Whatever these guys put out is worth buying. Reguardless of whether its commercial or not, these guys are some of the more experimental musicians of our generation. Its the kind of music, like Bach, or Mozart that you feel smarter after listening to.

    The songs morph into other songs, within songs. The lyrics are completely mindblowing. The type of band where you ponder for hours, what the hell does "Exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed" mean?

    The back stories on the making of the albums, and what inspired each album is as fascinating as hell, the antiimmigration protests, haunted and cursed ouija boards, possessed individuals.

    There is alot of crap musicially out there, but there are also bands pushing the musicial limits, pushing the art form harder and farther than its been. bands that are 10-20-30 years ahead of their time. The Mars Volta is that band

    By acoustic, Omar meant a mellower album. I've heard it's alot like Amputechture.

    According to their wiki, they have a couple more studio albums in the can, along with a Frances/Amputechture ear live album. Omar is also planning on putting some kinda film documenting quite a bit of TMV's run.

    I agree, with Pridgen back there I find it hard to believe it will be a mellow, acoustic album. Mark these words "this will be the best mars volta album to date"

    1st off: I Love the Mars Volta! No matter how good the record will be I don't think it will top 'Comatorium'! I personally think that 'Amputechture' is a pile of musical shit! I tried at least a hundred times to like that record but at the end of the day one has to admit it is simply crap!

    I've seen them 5 times live and they've been worth it every time. I saw them for the first time even before their debut album came out when they just had their 'Tremulant EP' out and I just went to the show to see what those guys out of At the Drive-In were up to now ... needless to say I was blown away! Saw them later that year on a festival where they played a one hour set, still remember the setlist: 'Roulette Dares' & 'Cicatriz ESP' both in 30min versions that was absolutely awesome as well! Actually going to see them again in July, can't wait!! :mrgreen:

    It's definitely leaked. Not bad, but it's definitely friendlier than most of their other stuff. It doesn't ever reach the intensity of the rest of their albums.

    I found a copy last night. It did not grab me. that intensity you speak of i also found to be lacking.

    I appreciate their willingness to show a different side of them. It is almost like alice in chains making sap & jar of flies. It's still AIC but was not their rockin side. I see this as TMV showing their other side so to speak.

    It may grow on me but one listen did not grab me, but i should also point out that I've felt each of their albums since the first two have been lacking so i have not been a huge fan for a while except for their live shows. They still kill.

    going through my first listen right now and i might be in the minority but i like it. i knew it would be different & softer than their previous albums. i don't like it as much as others but i still think it's good

    for anyone who doesn't feel like getting the leak, their uk website has six of the eight songs (probably better quality) from Octahedron: http://www.themarsvolta.co.uk/octahedron/

    The theme for this record involves two of Cedric and Omars' friends from El Paso who mysteriously disappeared one day and never were seen again. The songs are different possibilities of what might have happened to them.

    Lyrically, this album is probably one of their best: http://forum.thecomatorium.com/forum/in ... &p=3242983

    Overall, I really like how stripped down and mellow this album is and can't wait till it comes out in just 9 more days!

    Out of all the TMV's albums, Deloused is still my favorite. I'd rank Octahedron 2nd, tied with Frances The Mute.

    Finally starting to click. Could very well ending up passing Amputechture for, once everything gets good and settled in.

    idk it's definitely different. no wacky zappa-ish solos by omar. it definitely is more of a focus on cedric and his vocals. nonetheless it'll probably grow on me. it'll be hard to pass amputechture though.
    Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
    Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
    Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

    I love TMV but they would absolutely not be a good opener for PJ. yes, I know they are phenomenal live.

    I totally agree. I've seen them twice, and they are a great live act...but it just wouldn't be a good fit with PJ.

    I think if they stuck to the right material they could open for PJ. They're as much like PJ as some more recent openers. I can easily think of an hour of material that would work for PJ.

    Granted thats no way to see TMV and who knows what they would do to our perception of the following PJ performance. They're so hyperactive I could see it taking some wind out of PJ's sails for a main set.

    They've opened for RHCP numerous times and I think, musically at least, that sounds as farfetched as TMV openin for PJ.

    but with opening for rhcp they had the tie in that frusciante plays quite a bit of guitar on volta albums, and they played together on tour quite a bit too
