Haven't really given him a fair chance before, but recently I've been playing the shit out of Guero, Odelay! and The Information...it's really sticking to me. I love how eclectic his style can be.

Anybody else here a fan?
Anybody seen him, and can share good/bad stories?
and finally, does anybody have any recommendations on where to go next with his collection?

His stuff is all over the place.

My fav is probably Sea Change. It is very different from his other albums. Very much a break up melancholy album. The songs are not upbeat they are all downcast. Some really great touching stuff there though.

Also he is re releasing his hard to find One Foot In the Grave Album this year which i am very interested to check out!

true genius artists of our time. incredible stuff.

bowie gets credit for being a chameleon with physical appearance changes, but Beck's genre hopping is untouched. He excels at everything he does.

love it all. Modern Guilt was wicked last year.

OP, check out the first 6 or 7 tracks of MIDNITE VULTURES....very electronic and fun.

Oh i did catch him live a couple years ago and i really enjoyed the set. Lots of fun live.

he had a full puppet show of everyone in the band playing along with them. it was pretty neat.

not to mention he covered teh flaming lips Do You Realize which is one of my favorite songs of all time so that pretty much sealed the deal.

Yeah love Beck and love seeing him live, it's usually really entertaining. Last time he was in Manchester it seemed a bit flat though, new band and not much crowd reaction. Didn't look like he was enjoying it too much.

i felt the same way when i saw him @ ACL last year. i was really looking forward to his show, but it just seemed like he was bored & disinterested.

Strange - it's normally such a treat, wonder if it was anything to do with the new band members?

Beck is one of my all time favorites.
I did see him on the last tour at the Hollywood Bowl and yeah...it was pretty boring. Kind of upsetting cosidering it was billed as his big homecoming hsow with Spoon and MGMT. I'd seen him before with other crews and it was much much better.
    Hopefully he
    A. gets a new band for the next round or
    B. does an acoustic tour

I'd rank his albums like this:
    1. Mutations
    2. Odelay
    3. Sea Change
    4. Guero
    5. Midnight Vultures
    6. Modern Guilt
    7. Mellow Gold
    8. The Information
    9. One Foot in the Grave

Beck is f'n awesome. I grew up listening to Mellow Gold and Odelay. I'll never forget seeing him as the preheadliner for Neil Young + Crazy Horse at HORDE 97, not too long after Odelay came out. Incredible. Anyhow, I've recently been very, very into Modern Guilt. It has given me a new found appreciation for Beck after not paying attention to him much in recent years.

It looks like I have a lot more investing to do in Beck. That's okay though, his music is hard not to like...it's so catchy and infectious, and like mentinoed before, his genre hopping is so crazy that it's hard not to be interested in what he's doing next. I always appreciate artists who can capture any and all genres

Thx for the help everyone! I hope I get the chance to see him live one day.

i listen to 'sea change' a lot. its super depressing and like intodeep said, a total girlfriend break-up album, but i think its great. it actually just came in the mail today on vinyl. odelay is amazing too.

i saw him play the sb bowl a couple of years ago and he put on a great show. the only complaint was he came on a little after 9 and the bowl curfew is 10:30pm so his set was pretty damn short.

Beck is great. Sea Change and Guero are my favorites of his.

His live act is also fantastic. A few years back I saw him and he did a cover of Hot in Here by Nelly. And on a song or two that he did off of Sea Change with just his acoustic, his band sat at a dinner table near the back of the stage and ate dinner! Awesome!!

I only have Odelay and Modern Guilt. Odelay doesn't really work for me, oddly enough, even though it should be right up my alley. I do adore Modern Guilt, though.

  • sea change is a masterpiece. Lost Cause, Golden Age, Guess Im doing Fine. Classic songs.
  • still dont understand why Wayne Coyne was hating on him. Beck seems to me to be one of those folks like Ed or Bruce or Neil, who dont buy into their own hype and live relatively normal lives, or as close to normal as one can get and still be a big name musician. when making a list of careerist musicians, Beck doesnt come to mind at all. The changing of his styles every album, the off the wall almost stream of consciousness lyrics, the refusal to do many interviews and be on many magazines. Not the sort of actions one undertakes when trying to be a careerist!

The man is a pure chameleon genius ........... he is one of a very few artists I could not bare to never hear again.
I first saw him in 94,his first Scottish gig promoting Mellow Gold at 250 capacity at King Tuts in Glasgow.Have seen him 5 times since. He is off the wall live, from throwing all these wild disco moves on the Midnight Vultures tour to sitting at the piano solo for Sea Changes ......... fantastic.Have colected his catalogue and a few rarities over the years ........ but my favourite still remains Midnight Vultures.
His website has some really intersting stuff on there.

I just picked up Sea Change, Mutations, and Modern Guilt.

Now I own those three, Odelay!, Guero, and The Information.

What can I say, I now fucking love Beck...his creativity keeps my head cocked like a confused dog. Sea Change is depressingly beautiful. Guero is another favorite of mine...I'm soaking in all his music lately and it's really speaking to me.

Thanks for the help everyone! Now, I just hope I get the chance to see him play one of these days.

Mutations is a bit of a grower, but amazing.

Also, Beck has some of the most incredible b-sides. They're all over the place

I'll look around my place when i get a chance but the HUB is the best spot for live and rare Beck (when up and running)

I'm listening to Sea Change right now... is there a single album out there that is more desolate, heartbreaking and haunting than this one? It tops even the darkest Elliott Smith or Ray Lamontagne moments.

Beck is such a talented musician and songwriter. I have everything except his first album, strangely enough. My girlfriend has it though. It's the only album she has. I'm a fan for life. I enjoy his music so much. Modern Guilt was brilliant. Might be my favorite.

I have been engulfed in Sea Change and Guero for about a month now. I really have to get all of this guys music. I cant believe it took me this long to really discover Beck. Simply awesome.
