What things do you like/hate about LA?

I've been working in Film/TV production for the past 6 years now in a really really small pretty terrible (for abundance in jobs anyway) market. When my lease is up I want to move to at least give this one more shot.

NYC or LA? Anyone in a similar position?

You can't go to the beach at almost any time of the year in NY. :)

Also, I love the fact that you can go hiking in the "mountains" (Topanga Park) and not have to drive 3-4 hours to get there. Plus, you get a nice view of the city from the top of the hills.

The main downfall is the traffic though. Takes forever to get _anywhere_ which is a pain in the butt. At least in NYC it's pretty easy to get a cab or take the subway. I'm more of an LA guy myself though, so give me the warm weather, the beach, palm trees, and lots of great outdoor music venues.
No longer overwhelmed it seems so simple now.
  • I like the fact it is far far away from here

I find very little about LA that is "good".

I'm sorry, I just hate that damn city!

Basically, people not from LA will say they hate it. But they keep moving here and visiting. It is so annoying. (Edit: This is a joke)

Honestly, what I love about it: weather, things to do, restaurants, the Lakers, the Dodgers, the fact that people are laid back, the ocean, the fact that you can go snowboarding and wakeboarding on the same day.

What I hate: The traffic, and the lack of good public transportation. Those go hand in hand.

Even with an actor's strike looming, I think there would still be tons more work there with nonunion work than there is in Philly any day.

I have lived in L.A. my entire life....the traffic and the smog really suck at times, and a large percentage of the people who work in "the industry" really have an overactive sense of entitlement and ego. The fact that someone serves food out of a catering truck at a movie studio seems to make them feel superior to someone who serves food out of a taco truck on the streets of East L.A.

But, L.A. has so much to offer.....every band plays here, we have franchises for MOST of the major sports (USC and UCLA football more then make up for the lack of NFL team), and, if you are looking to crack into the entertainment biz, this is surely the place to do it.

I have a view of the Pacific Ocean from my window, and from the other side of my office, I can see the mountains.

As I get older, I like the laid-back manner here.

It ain't such a bad place to be!
  • I don't know, I didn't find LA all that laid back. I loved the weather & you can find people who are real there, but there aren't many!

Most people don't look you in the eye when you talk to them, and the people who are native to Southern California are aggravating. Much higher quotient of morons than anywhere else (although they are extremely attractive morons.)
My job takes me to LA a lot. If someone gave me a free apartment there, I wouldn't turn it down.

sigh. okay first off - big city, so sorry we don't hold your hand Uncle Billy Bob...

also in the Mexifornian culture it is kinda unsaid but it's considered rude to stare into people's eyes...didn't anyone ever tell you "don't make eye contact" when you are passing by someone on the street? hahahahaa

also, the Autonomy of Los Angeles is one of it's best features...when it comes to the people.

now - seriously - why do you find Southern California NATIVES "annoying" ?? is it because we don't like being crowded and having our "image" stereotyped and regurgitated back at us through your filtered and tired expectations? Is it because we can TOTALLY tell when you have NO idea what you're doing on your board? Is it because we can all pronounce our Spanish names with gusto? Or is it because each and every one of us wakes up and says a special prayer of thanksgiving for just being HERE??

I won't even comment on the "moron" line...I think I am going to go outside and sit in the sand...errr, my backyard. :)

Everyone in Los Angeles is from someplace else... from my experience, there are an awful lot of people from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin out here. Everyone comes from some other state and bitches and complains about, "But there's no seasons here"... or how GREAT <insert state name here> is... yet, THEY STAY HERE!!!
My guess is Riff runs into foriegners living in Los Angeles... transplants from points East of here... and thinks that because they are here, they must be from here.
Los Angeles would be a great fucking place... if people who live someplace else and bitch and moan about being here would just pack their fucking shit and move BACK to East Bumfucking Someplace Else.

This is so true. This is the thing with LA... People complain about the Hollywood douche bags. OK, I live in Hollywood, and yes, there are a lot of Hollywood douche bags. But believe me... pretty much everyone trying to make it in the industry, making up the douche bag population, is from out of state. If you see a guy in a tight white t-shirt with aviator sunglasses and a fauxhawk, driving a convertible VW GTI and spending 65% of his waiter's incopme on an apartment in the Hills, the guy is NOT FROM LA. He's from Michigan or Arizona or New Jersey, trying to land a role in a sitcom.

I grew up in Ventura County and can tell the "natives" from the transplants in a heartbeat. I'll join anyone here in complaining about the LA douche bags. But they're not from here.

Those morons are not "native to Southern California." Very few people in the "industry" are actual natives. This is the place to come from somewhere else to make it in the industry. The people who do have an attraction to the "scene" and want to be a douche bag themselves, so they do and here they are.

I used to be a huge Bulls fan, as I grew up liking MJ, but the NBA has changed to such a 'thug' league, and don't really have a favorite in the sport anymore. Only start to watch when the second round of the playoffs begin. I do enjoy rooting against the Lakers though, so to answer your question, at times, yes, I'm a Clipper fan as well as the Celts. Was a beautiful thing to see Kobe get embarassed in that final game :D
