Well that's not nearly enough detail for me to work with....

That sucks, you don't have to change, just be more selective with your trust. There is nothing wrong with having an interest self preservation, and it will make for better friendship foundations too.

there's nothing to 'work'...it's simply an observation. one can interpret 'deadbeat' in any way they see fit. i think we all have had at least 1-2 deadbeats in our lives, people who don't honor their debts, live up to expectations, whatever......

also, therein lies WHY one gets burned; sometimes it is very difficult to know who ultimately will be a'deadbeat'...doesn't always happen early on. once it does tho, sure, now ya know! :p haha. i think the termination of friendship, the lack of respect, is always the worst of it...but from a financial standpoint ain't fun either. eh well... might be better to be less generous/understanding at times, but again...if i consider you a friend, that's just who and how i am. it is what it is...

It's hard to tell what this is about. What happened?

  • My oldest friend from childhood turned into a deadbeat and it really bothered me when I finally realized we had both gone too far in our separate directions for us to continue carrying on a real relationship.

I watched an episode of Home Improvement a couple of weeks ago in which Tim's old buddy stopped by the house and he had to cut him loose...I knew exactly what that episode was getting at

Good policy there. Never loan money to friends or relatives. If you have the money to spare and want to give it to them, that's another thing (although still has emotional implications)

I made a bad business decision recently. The guy now is trying to get out of the debt that he owes my firm. :( I honored my word, and now he is making me look bad. Bastard. :(

awww nick, that really sucks! :( nothing like messing with your professional rep. me, i am just out a few bucks (altho of course i would prefer getting it back!) and down one friend. however, one who does not show me courtesy/respect in such matters, obviously, really no friend. not one i want to have in any case.

know1, you are absolutely right! and i never did. in this instance, i really had no choice. it is amazing what you learn about people in such circumstances. obviously, my friendship was very 'cheap' to be avoided, not even try to 'explain' or rectify, over $$$.....and i'm the one who didn't get paid! :p hahaha.

    cutback.....:D
    LOVE!

are you kidding, he LOVEs it! ;)
    hahaha.

ok, in all seriousness...and trying to remain on topic...:p he's all for friendships, as long as they are reciprocal. no one likes a deadbeat. :D

nutthin' like a deadbeat to make you realize, whoa! bad call, and move on. makes it real easy in that sense i guess. still, i find i lament the loss of friendship, and it tarnishes the memory of good things too, and for that...it really does suck. besides, yes, no one likes being stiffed either. hubby was pissed. hahaha. eh, karma.....

A few months ago I had an old frien/co-worker call me to see if I would help his employer out of a bind. They needed a designer for a huge project and they needed one ASAP. I took the assignment for less than my normal rate because it was friend. To make a long story short my "friend's" boss owes my a couple of thousand dollars that he is refusing to pay. Every minute that I worked on that project was approved, in writing, by him and my friend. I have tried on several occations to contact my friend to tell him that he knows his boss is in the wrong and that they need to do what's right before I take legal action. This has been going on for a month now and he still hasn't returned my calls. So I finally filed a complaint against the agency with the state labor department. So much for friendship. Here I am taking less money to help out a friend in need and he just complies when his boss decides to dick me over.

It kills me that this asshole is with holding my last two checks simply because he is a cheap bastard. What bothers me the most is that my friend completely turned his back on me. I have helped that ungrateful fucker out so many times in the past and this is how he shows his gratitude.

seriously, that is the only *good* to come out of such situations. $$$ oftentimes lets you see who are real friends. it's sad, but true. i would NEVEr think of doing such to anyone, most especially a friend, and even moreso if someone goes out of their way for me. that really is such shit.

the 'principle' of it is what always burns me the most, and sure...no one likes being taken advantage of, most especially by one you consider a 'friend'.....damn.......
