Anyone here ever done a triathlon?

I'm scheduled to do one 12 days from now. I've never done anything like this before. I started training about 4 weeks ago, and am feeling pretty good. However, I just do one event each morning for about 45 minutes to an hour. A couple of days I have done some cross-training.

Anyway, if you have, do you have any tips for the day of the race....how to pace yourself, what and when to eat beforehand, warming up, etc?

Any advice is appreciated. This topic would be much more suited to a triathlon board, but I'm not a member of one....though I should go look for one.

i haven't done one but my good friend did the half-ironman down in florida and i helped him a bit with nutrition ...

firstly, i'm guessing you are doing a sprint distance and nothing bigger then that because you are not gonna do so hot with only 4 wks of training ...

with only 12 days to go - you aren't gonna gain much fitness although i would try and get a brick workout in soon (2 events back to back - either swim to bike or bike to run) ... you should be carb loading (low to moderate glycemic) leading up to the race day ... have a high calorie low glycemic breakfast at least 2 hrs prior ... drink lots and pee lots leading up to the race and drink a sports drink just before the race starts ...

calculate the calories you will need for the race and fuel accordingly in your transitions and on the bike ...

try reading blogs of other athletes doing your distance to see what worked and what didn't ...

    have fun
    don't hurt yourself

I've got one big tip: body glide.

it's amazing what running in wet spandex can do. ouch. honestly that was the worst part of it, the discomfort from being wet. other than that...I wouldn't eat much outside of an energy bar or two, maybe a plain bagel. How long of a tri is it?

Hmmmm...I have not thought about that! Ouch! I will definitely check that out.

Yes, it is a sprint tri....500 m swim, 15 mile bike ride, 3 mile run. Total, I will have 6 weeks of training. My goal is to finish the thing while completing each event at a good, solid pace (no walking or backstroke), and to get myself in decent shape. It has worked. I feel great. My training schedule is 6 days a week, one day for each event.

I've done two brick trainings (the past 2 Saturdays). I ran a mile after I biked, and the other week I biked home after my swim. I'm doing a brick run this Saturday.

With conditioning, I'm doing good, I think. The body glide is a definite good tip. Thanks!!!

is it an open water swim? If so, you're only goal for the swim is going to be to get there and back- it doesn't matter how good of a swimmer you are, it's all about not crashing into other people and staying on course- which means you'll have to breath looking straight ahead. getting out of the water in good time is pretty much the key. Swallowing salt water sucks for the run too, so try to avoid that. if it's in a pool, disregard all of this :). I've only done open water. I thought my strong swimming ability would help, but it's of little use in mass chaos.

but you should be fine for a sprint- I know a lot of people who finish sprints who didn't train and weren't in the greatest shape. I was in good shape when I did it, and ran, swam and biked regularly anyway, but I didn't actually train.

Yes, it is an open water swim in a lake...no salt water! My plan is to hang back at first and let the crowd get ahead of me and then settle into a good pace. I'm not sure about swimming while looking straight ahead...I did that one day whan I forgot my goggles, and it was not fun! So I think I will hang back and then try to get into a good pace.

What is a good decent time? The average time last year for this event was 1 hr. 45 min. That is kind of what I have in mind of how I'd like to finish, though I really have not idea if that is possible.

I'm thinking of trying an Olympic length tri sometime in the next year.

I think for these distances and since you've never done it, I'd shoot for anything under 2 hours...but for a 500 m swim it could be longer than that depending on how fast you swim. I did 2 and the swim was not that long and I think the bike was shorter too but the run was a little longer. I'm a girl and I did them in like 1:50-1:55, and I walked for about 5 minutes in one (salt water in the tummy).

I'm all done with my training. Two days of rest, and the event is Sunday!!! I'm starting to have pre race jitters now.
