Want to read the book as am in a Led Zep phase right now, and also to get stoked for the upcoming film.

Never read it before.

Is it worth the hype it gets?

It is almost like in general Tolkien is viewed as a god.

it is worth the time to read. if you decide after you have read the book that you wasted your time. send me a bill, i will compensate you. but i honestly believe you will enjoy it.

actually................do not send me the bill.

The Hobbit is great. The Hobbit was aimed more for younger readers while the Lord of the Rings trilogy was not. However that does not mean anything bad about the Hobbit, still a great book. It's also the prequel and sort of sets up LOTR's, in case you didn't know that.

You got it. I think it's pretty cool that they're making the movie in two parts. Pretty stoked with everyone that's involved so far...

Read it. You won't regret it. Even people who have struggled to enjoy LOTR have enjoyed The Hobbit. I read it first as a child and have re-read it many times since.

In The Hobbit, Tolkien actually mananges to focus on the narrative at hand rather than playing the role of tangent man and frankly, it makes for a better read. Well that, and the fact that he could actually bring himself to end The Hobbit, something he seemed almost unwilling to do with LOTR.

I read it before reading LOTR and before the movies were made and it was really good, not too difficult a read compared to LOTR, I would also recommend you read it

It is a great book. It doesn't have the great depth that LOTR has, but it sets the backdrop for events that are referenced. I'm curious how it translates to film (vs. LOTH which was much more serious and had tons of material to reference to.)

I think it could do really well with Smog and such. I just hope the battles are better than the animated one was. Anyone remember Bilbo looking down on the battlefield and all you see was a ton of swirling dust clouds like in Loony Toons?
