My uncle is taking me for my college graduation in may. He originally wanted to take me to Norway (its our heritage) but I talked to him for awhile and we decided on Greece. I'm sad not to see Norway, but I've always wanted to go to the Mediterranean. I've watched a little travel DVD but havent done much talking to actual people who have been. Anyone got anything interesting to share?

I've never gone - although it's one of the top places I want to see. I don't have any firsthand knowledge, but my parents go almost every year (don't know why they've never taken me with them!) :( From what they said - a couple of days in Athens is more than enough. Fit in the historical sites, etc - then get to the islands. They've gone to a bunch of different ones - and it seems like they each have their own flavor. So which ones you visit depends on what you're looking for. From what I've seen in their videos, I reallllly wanna see Rhodes and Santorini. Rhodes is near Turkey, so it has all that Turkish influence, which i love! Santorini has those beautiful black beaches. Enjoy! It seems like a really amazing place to visit.

I've been to Rhodes a couple of times, highly recomend it. Rhodes town, including the old walled city, also Lindos on the island is an awesome place.
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

I've heard they don't like americans too much there. Also be extremely careful with your belongings, my sister and her travel buddy both had their
wallets pick pocketed. My sister from her purse her friend from his pants pocket.
Take time to see the sky,
    Find shapes in the clouds.
Hear the murmur of the wind
    and touch the cool water.
    Walk softly,
    we are intruders,
    tolerated briefly
    In an infinite universe.

they hate us...part of the reason I decided to leave. I was never looked at as a greek..always as that fucking american with the baggy clothes and the accent..like "how do you talk Greek like that?"

Just do the tourist thing and watch the shady folks like you said trying to charge you 3x for a bottle of water and the pickpockets in Athens and you'll be alright

thanks so much everyone! i'm really looking forward to it. i'venever been in a pick pocket situation before so i'm crossing my fingers on that one...it'd be pretty nice to beat the shit out of someone stealing my wallet, but i'm sure they'll be long gone by the time my dumb ass notices. we're taking a cruise on the second half of the trip touring the islands....i'm not sure which islands are on the intinerary so far but i'll let yall know!

do like I do and keep your shit in your front pocket if you have baggy back pockets and feel it'll be easy to get you

when you go to Rafina or Piraeus they have package deals for like 3 or 4 islands to do in like a week..so just book a ferry or cruise and youre good to go. MY suggestion/ Hit Ios, Paros and or Santorini, mykonos, Rhodes.
Crete is a beautiful island too..where my dads from..just dont get scared when you hear them shooting off rifles at night..its a celebration..tradition and stuff lol ;)
    have a great time man

I was in Athens and Naxos, very lovely. The sea can be pretty rough; if you're not used to that, make sure you got some tabs or something against seasickness. It's also very helpful if you learn the Greek alphabet a little bit, so you will be able to at least read signs for example. Have a nice journey!

  • If you hook up with a Greek girl, there's a good chance she enjoys the 3rd option if you get my drift...
