I have listened to all their albums up to Quadrophenia and am not impressed sorry.
I like the first album, but the rest didn't do anything for me.
Do I need to keep listening for it to grow on me?

If you tried Who's Next, Live At Leeds, and Quadrophenia and still aren't into it...then you may not be a Who fan...

I would say that your last effort should be By Numbers...which, in my opinion is probably their most underrated effort.

    Good luck :?

Okay bringing back an old thread of mine...

I'm really starting to like this band lol, loaded my mp3 player with their albums for the boring plane trip to Croatia in 12 days time.

Really love the deluxe edition of Who's Next.
Love the heavy riffs, one of the bonus songs sounds like the start of Black, I think it is ''Water''.

Leeds deluxe with 'A quick one while he's away'' is amazing, have to play that loud.
I think the cover of that song in Immagine in Cornice dvd got me into this song.

I like Quadrophenia more than Tommy, it is starting to grow on me.
A quick one is a good album to.
The who sell out hasn't blown me away...yet...

I guess it took patience to let the songs grow on me.

In conclusion my two favourite releases are Who's Next & Live at Leeds.

P.S could someone kindly show me how to find topics, I tried searching with ''Who'' and it had hundred of pages. I then tried my posts only and had to go through 24 pages to find this thread.
    Is there a quicker way?
have you gotten the dvd of who concerts and the documentary called "an amazing journey the story of the who". also have you gotten pete's solo cd called lifehouse. i've loved this band since i was little. saw them live first the time last year at the vh1 who rock honors concert and when they opened up with baba, i got chills like i never have before and just had this big shocked face.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
    Sammi: Wanna just break up?

I agree that the deluxe of Who's Next is a brilliant album. I also prefer Quad to Tommy although I have a lot of affection for Tommy after all these years. It was the first Who album I ever bought and I bought it the week it was released in 1969. :)

Did you know the deluxe version of Sell Out was just released? You might like it better if you haven't listened to it yet. There is a lot of love for that album although it is not one of my faves. I agree with the person who said that By Numbers is underrated. That is one of their best IMO but it's one of the hardest to get into.

Since you like the version of A Quick One on Live at Leeds, let me again recommend the DVD for The Who Live at Kilburn. The bonus DVD has a show recorded in December 1969 which was 2 months before the Leeds concert. The set list is almost the same and there is a killer version of A Quick One. The footage is very grainy for that show but well worth seeing. :D

I love Sell Out & A Quick One but my favourites are Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia, Live at Leeds & The Albert Hall concert. By Numbers is the best of the "later" albums without a doubt :D

    This weekend I purchased:

*Live at Kilburn dvd, was let down when 'A quick one' cuts into Happy Jack, but sighed with relief when it was in the bonus section, that song rocks

*Who's Next - got it on Saturday but then at another store today I saw the remastered version and was disappointed. ah well, please tell me I am not missing out. I never knew they had a remastered version.

*Live At Leeds - they had the deluxe version with Tommy but I chose the 14 track version.

    8-)

Quadrophenia is my favorite album by them but it might not be the best starting point. Who's Next is surely the best starting point.

A bit off topic... I remember a while ago on this board there was a thread about what song by the who you'd like to hear them cover next and my selection was Love Reign o'er Me... and then a year or so later they did it. That song is hands down my favorite by The Who...

There is only one way to listen to this band...LOUD!!
Greatest band of all time in my opinion.
I like "The Kids are Alright" better than "Amazing Journey".
Quad is my favourite album, and Numbers is awesome also.
I also like "Who Are You"-a sloppy Moon is better than no Moon,as we found out.

Glad to hear you found this influential, groundbreaking band.

This thread has inspired me to listen to The Who all day today! Lazy Sunday indeed... I'm listening to Face Dances right now... I know it probably isn't everyone's favorite but I love the song 'Another Tricky Day'... and I think the rest of the album is actually pretty good.

That bonus concert is such fun. Almost like watching them perform Live at Leeds.

Is it 2 discs? They released it remastered with extra tracks then released a deluxe edition a few years later with 2 discs. This is kind of the story of being a hardcore Who fan.  You get all excited because they release a remastered version of one of their albums and it has extra songs on it, then a few years later they release the deluxe edition, and this will someday be followed by . . . . :ugeek:   (I have 3 CDs of LAL, plus vinyl, so you get the idea.) Whichever version you bought, enjoy it. ;)
*Live At Leeds - they had the deluxe version with Tommy but I chose the 14 track version.
That version is fine. It has the tracks from the original LAL plus a few more. It also has the one track from Tommy that you should hear, Sparks. Even Pete has said he thinks that is one of the best versions of Sparks the band ever played. :D

Another recently released DVD set is Maximum R&B Live. This was originally released on video and hasn't been available for several years. It was just released again and has additional footage.

Good time to be a Who fan, lots of old stuff getting to be available. 8-)

Yeah, I like that song and I like Cache Cache. People slag on Kenney Jones a lot but I saw The Who on the 79-80 tour and they were ON FIRE! I like Face Dances better than It's Hard.

P.S They are playing in Melbourne Australia next year!
Just saw it on the television advertisement break!
Yes, their first time to play Oz since the 60s so it's a pretty big deal.

they were here in Oz a few years ago, so that statement was not true 8-)
That being said, i saw The Who in Sydney a few months back and i must say it was one of the best shows of any band i have seen. Well worth the $$ that i shelled out. The played old and new, and had a great time doing it 8-)
    2003 - Sydney x3,
    2006 - Reading Festival,
2007 - Katowice, London, Nijmegen, Rock Werchter,
    2008 - MSG x2, Hartford, Mansfield x2, Beacon Theater,
    2009 - Melbourne, Sydney,
2010 - I watched it go to fire!

Oops. You got me. :o

Yeah, they played in Sydney and Melbourne in 2004. I should have said this was their first Australian tour since the 60s. ;)

Glad you enjoyed the show you went to. Who concerts are always very high energy, I keep that up feeling for days afterward. :D

That hissing annoys me when playing Who albums loud.
Are all albums like this, are there remastered versions that solve this.
Eg.. A Quick One While He's Away.

You made the right choice. The 14 track version sounds awesome, but the "deluxe" version has awful sound.
