The Who

I am looking into getting their material, I like what Pearl Jam cover and downloaded the originals to see if they are the same, and yes I like them.
What is good for me to begin with?
Suggestions?
I got these songs...
Out in the street
My generation
I'm a boy
The kids are alright
The good's gone
Baba O'Riley
A quick one while he's away

One of the greatest albums ever.
I am new to the Who, but Tommy is pretty intriguing so far.
Yep, it was my fav album of alltime until No Code came out.

I like Substitute too, I'm One and Let's See Action.
But I like them all really.
Oh, Eminence Front.
(Shawn Smith's official website, but not Thee Shawn Smith)
Who's Next (definately a top choice)
Live at Leeds (great show)
Tommy (a lot of "filler" but it's still a classic)
Quadrophenia (It will grow on you, but when it does you will love it)
Don't get:
The Who Sell out (Only one I don't care for)
Endless Wire (I actually love this cd quite a bit, but its definately not a choice for new fans)
I'm sure that Who Are You and My Generation are also great albums but I havent heard them yet.
8/7/08, 6/9/09
+1...Start with these and then pickup Quadrophenia...its a little harder to get into though
-my dad after hearing Not for You for the first time on SNL .

Will try that album first and their debut album!
Thank you for all your suggestions.
P.S They are playing in Melbourne Australia next year!
Just saw it on the television advertisement break!
My favorite song by the Who is "Bargain"...followed by "Behind Blue Eyes"...both of which you can find on Who's Next.
You really can't go wrong. They're so overshadowed by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, but had far more influence than any of those bands (with the exception of Zeppelin).
You've gotten a lot of good suggestions and speaking as a fan of 40+ years I would just add a few comments. (I am not quite as old as Pete and Rog but I've been a Who fan since I was 13 when I first heard I Can See For Miles in 1967.)
Keep in mind that when The Who got started they were trying to make it big on the radio so they produced singles--short, pop tunes. That's what their early albums will sound like. The first album to really sound Whoish--and one of my faves--is A Quick One. A good collection of hits that came out in the 70s is Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy.
Of course The Who really made their name early on as a live band and some people still consider Live at Leeds the best live rock album ever released. I would start with the original version, which has only six tracks. It's just about perfection. From there you can take it to the Deluxe Edition with the complete concert. Included in that is some of the stage banter which is an essential part of every Who show. Also, a DVD is about to be released of The Who's December 1977 Kilburn show, which was Keith Moon's next to last performance. The band felt that it was an inferior performance and so it hasn't been released until now. When you see it, you'll see that in their heyday The Who on a bad night made most bands look pathetic.
Later Who albums often can take a few listens to get into. They remind me of PJ albums in that regard, no? A good one to start with, as others have said is the excellent Who's Next, one of the best albums of the 70s by any band. The Deluxe Edition of that album includes several live tracks. Quad is an outstanding album and Pete considers it his masterpiece but you may find it hard to get into at first. If that's the case just go back to it later. I very much like the underappreciated By Numbers. Slip Kid, However Much I Booze, Dreaming from the Waist, Blue Red and Grey, How Many Friends, In A Hand or a Face--some of Pete's best songs are on that album.
Enjoy listening to The Who! I have friends who will be traveling to the Melbourne show and I hope you'll get a chance to be there.
Quadrophenia
Who's Next
Tommy
The Who By Numbers (get this, it's one of their best... Ed's favorite Who song is on here "How Many Friends". along with "Blue, Red And Grey" which inspired Ed to write "Soon Forget").
Live At Leeds
Odds & Sods (has some good stuff)
any random Best Of set. make sure it has a ton of tracks including "The Kids Are Alright" because my Best Of doesn't have it and i can't understand why!
~it is shining it is shining~
agreed- great for someone who wants to get into the band. once you do, check out quadrophenia, as others have already posted.
the who are a phenominal band, really a class act. they're in thier middle 60s, but once they get on stage, its like theyre in their 30s again!! just recently saw them live and they were great!!!
I like the first album, but the rest didn't do anything for me.
Do I need to keep listening for it to grow on me?
I don't care for them either. I have Who's Next, and that's a good album. Other than that, a best of is really all that's necessary. The rock operas are kinda self-indulgent wankery, and their early stuff is as lame and cheesy as early Beatles albums. Don't beat yourself up.
I would probably stick with A Quick One (Happy Jack), Live at Leeds, and Who's Next.
But you may never get into them so I wouldn't worry about it.
Now, I will tell you that tickets are just going on sale for The Who's first Australian tour in 40 years! They will be playing several dates next March so you might want to check them out. A Who show is always fun.
Any live show with the 'Orrible 'Oo will have lots of spontaneity and plenty of stage banter from Pete, usually with Keith chiming in.
If you can, just get the first version of Leeds with 6 tracks. They eventually released a deluxe edition with the whole concert that's really great to have but I think you appreciate it more after you've heard that first release. Or maybe that's because that's the way I had to hear it! But it's hard to argue with how good those 6 tracks are.
I also love the movie The Kids Are Alright: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTpyocmlzcM
The original Leeds album had just these tracks:
Young Man Blues
Substitute
Summertime Blues
Shakin' All Over
My Generation
Magic Bus
The one thing I'll say for that 2nd disc on the deluxe edition is that it has a killer version of Sparks. I could listen to just that over and over.
The problem with "Leeds Deluxe" is that the guy who did the remastering did a horrible job. The single disc version is *way* better.
I'm really starting to like this band lol, loaded my mp3 player with their albums for the boring plane trip to Croatia in 12 days time.
Really love the deluxe edition of Who's Next.
Love the heavy riffs, one of the bonus songs sounds like the start of Black, I think it is ''Water''.
Leeds deluxe with 'A quick one while he's away'' is amazing, have to play that loud.
I think the cover of that song in Immagine in Cornice dvd got me into this song.
I like Quadrophenia more than Tommy, it is starting to grow on me.
A quick one is a good album to.
The who sell out hasn't blown me away...yet...
I guess it took patience to let the songs grow on me.
In conclusion my two favourite releases are Who's Next & Live at Leeds.
P.S could someone kindly show me how to find topics, I tried searching with ''Who'' and it had hundred of pages. I then tried my posts only and had to go through 24 pages to find this thread.
Is there a quicker way?
I've got this page bookmarked
... and enjoy Croatia
Thanks
