Story from a lucky man at Montreal 1

I have been a club member for 3 years and went on the web site the day the Montreal 1 tickets went on sale. I could not get tickets immediately when they came on sale as I was repeatedly getting a “unavailable” message. I tried a few hours later and finally was able to move along the purchasing process. I got a confirmation a few days later and following this saw the announcement that the second Montreal show went on sale.

After leaving my 4 kids at home with my mother-in-law and her friend, my 7.5 months pregnant wife and I left for the 3.5 hour drive from Perth Ontario to Montreal. I must tell you that my wife does not particularly like Pearl Jam but agreed to come as she liked the Into the Wild sound tract.

We got there in time to get a light dinner and then went to pick up our 10C tickets at the Place des Arts booth. Once we got there the person at the desk told me that he had no tickets under my name. I had this sudden sinking feeling in my heart. I remained calm and showed this person a copy of the e-mail I had received from the club. He pointed to me the date was for August 10. Sunday, not Saturday! That sinking feeling just tripled within a split second. How could that be. There must have been a mistake. I then asked if he could do anything to help us. He said that he could try to discuss this situation with the producer.

Ten minutes later this very nice guy with a back stage pass talked to me. I explained my situation and pointed to my pregnant wife. I explained that this could be the only night I could see Eddie, that I had to go back to my family early the very next day and that I was actually on call on Sunday afternoon as I am a physician. With a trembling voice I also told him that I would appreciate any thing he could try to help me and that I would understand if he could not help me. He obviously saw my despair, my love for Pearl Jam and Eddie, and said he would see what he could do.

I was starting to think that I would have to scalp two tickets. I had to see Eddie that evening.

The producer came back, said he had two tickets for me. I thanked him profusely with thank you, thank you, thank you, .... About twenty times. I almost had a tear in my eyes. He could certainly see my excitement and must have know that he had not wasted these tickets on us. Within 10 minutes I went from not having tickets to getting in the theater by the grace of Eddie’s producer.

My wife and I got in. I was so excited that I had not even looked at the tickets. As we moved toward the doors to get to our seats I noticed the row and seat number
freaking AA1 and AA3. First row center. Unbelievable!!! My heart was pounding.

We got to see then last 4 songs by Liam. Obviously Eddie’s concert was one of the best concert I have seen in my life. I particularly enjoyed Wishlist, Arc and all the songs from the sound track. I have seen approximately 140 concerts since age 14 years old.

Eddie threw a pick in our direction. My wife was sitting to my left and the pick went to her left. I tried to grab it but hit the arm of the lady who was sitting left to my wife. The pick ended up in front of me. As I felt bad for bumping this woman’s arm I gave her the pick. Two other picks came close to us later on the concert but I did not catch them. It absolutely did not matter as I was already in heaven.

Before the concert I talked to a few people in the first row. They were couples that Eddie’s producer had brought from the last row of the third balcony. I believe that Eddie does this as he is, and he mentioned this himself, a sucker for people that are engaged or are newly married. He probably also does this simply as a gesture of good will. I wonder if he does this for his security. This way he has people that like him a lot but will not go crazy and try to jump on stage. He certainly noticed the woman immediately to my right who was playing with her white bag during one of the early song of his concert.

As this is my first ever post I hope this was an appropriate one.

I would also hope this may get to Eddie’s producer, and possible Eddie himself, to whom I will be forever be thankful.

Alain

P.S. My wife though Eddie was amazing. I will now be able to slowly introduce her to “harder” Pearl Jam songs.

  • Thank you to everyone who took look at my original post. Thank you to the ones who posted a reply, including the fellow physician.

I forgot a few details in my original post
    1) I shook Eddie‘s hand at the end.
    2) I am planning to laminate the tickets and frame them. I just need to find a decent resolution picture of this tour. The ones on the internet display well on a computer screen but are too small to print for this purpose. As requested, I did not bring a camera to the concert. If anyone has a good resolution picture (above 4 Megapix) of Eddie with his guitar, I would appreciate getting a copy. Thanks.

What is it with physicians and buying 10c tickets for the wrong day, though? :p

  • I certainly was not trying to find an excuse and I was not blaming anyone but myself for what happened. I guess that I was trying to book my tickets between patients and was not fully paying attention. I cannot explain why this would happen more frequently to physicians but find it actually amuzing.

Great story, I just love reading feel good stories from lucky fans.

I was at Montreal 1, and had an extra pair to sell. Noticing that there were many other scalpers and nice people who were in the same situation, I decided to give the tickets away, to someone just hanging out there in the courtyard. The couple I found were pretty happy, and that good karma came back around to me when I was able to Meet Eddie myself later that night. And he said something to me that I will never ever forget!! (he told me I was beautiful!!). :)

I must say I did not get the same treatment when I fucked up the date in NJ in 2006. Not my finest moment.
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.
