Light Concert Years...and what comes next?

SpartanacusSpartanacus Orlando Posts: 813
1997 (5 California shows)...followed by the 1998 Yield Tour.
1999 (2 short Bridge School shows)...followed by the 2000 Binaural Tour.
2001 (2 short Bridge School shows and a Seattle show)...followed by another light year.
2002 (4 Seattle Shows and a short show opening for The Who in Chicago)...followed by the 2003 Riot Act Tour.
2017 (1 three song set at the HOF Induction in NY)...followed by ???

Obviously we are on chart for the worst calendar year to see PJ in history with only 3 songs played live and no shows in sight.

But in looking at their concert history, and the torrid pace they've been on from 2003 through 2016, I feel a little better about them taking the year off as PJ (obviously Eddie is still working, and I'm sure the other guys aren't sipping margaritas on the beach all day...and if they are, good for them, they deserve to!).

That being said...I think I can speak for everyone in saying that I hope 2018 is more like 1998, 2000, or 2003, versus the back to back 'dark ages' of 2001 and 2002.

Come on PJ!  We need you!!!

Wish there were more hints at an album being made. That would make the wait more bearable. Whatever they have planned though they have earned it and can't wait to see what they have planned next.

It is pretty amazing when you actually take a look at their tour history and see that weird dead stretch and then the insane streak from 2003 - 2016. It's impressive. No complaints here for them kind of taking a year off. Ed is obviously busy as he'll though.
    It's a hopeless situation...

I'm sure they're in the planning stages of something soon. All of these mystery sales are surely clearing some warehouse space. Hope it's for the storage of new music and merch and not a downsizing! As optimistic as I'd like to be however, I don't think we'll ever see Pearl Jam tour the way they did in 1998, 2000, or 2003. I hope I'm wrong though.

My guess is we'll get a new album before a tour.  Hoping the recording process has begun so we have a chance at some shows in 2018.

I remember in 2003 saying "there will never be another tour like 94/98/00." I think 2016 was just as much fun...if you live on the east coast. Don't count PJ out.

Well, I live in Vegas, and there hasn't been a show here since 2006. I did go to L.A. in 2013, and my guess would be that they're going to continue to do these short tour runs, perhaps with multiple night shows at a regional venue. Lots of bands doing that these days, and logistically/cost-wise, I suppose it makes sense. The southwest has been pretty much neglected since 2013, and before that, only a handful of shows were played in L.A. behind Backspacer, which was surprising, as they seemed to be doing more commercially to promote that album since the days of Binaural. I've pretty much accepted that I'll only get to see them once or twice a decade now, unless I want to travel out of state.

I don't think so either.   Those tours were pretty big (comparatively speaking).   I saw someone mention the torrid pace from 03 to '16, but I think the '98 - '03 touring styles were better.   They might not have toured big every year, but the big tours were big.   Usually 3 legs with a number of dates.    The currently method (post '06 i guess), is 20ish shows a/year (give our take).   A bit less than doing 80 every 2 or 3 years.   The problem being they can keep repeating areas when they tour every year.    It makes it feel like the smaller tours are much less expansive than the tours of old.

I figure they're on a break now, and I'm guessing the tragedy of this year, that probably extended the limbo period while they figure things out.   I still kind of feel like they'll go back the 20ish dates a year kind of thing.

As a PJ fan on Vancouver Island I do ok.   The Vancouver area gets shows when Seattle doesn't, and sometimes Seattle does but Vancouver doesn't.   When you combine then there's something to see every couple of years.... sometimes a few to see all at once.  Pemberton '16, Seattle/Vancouver '13, Vancouver 2011, Seattlex2/Vancouver '09, Gorgex2 '06, Gorge/Vancouver '05, Vancouver '03, Seattlex2 '02, etc...

That seems better than many other places PJ fans live.    I guess the best place to live on in the MidWest/NorthEast as the play that area lot, but it seems insanely hard to get tickets there.  Seattle's tough, but Vancouver tickets are easy to get :)

Yes, this has been the longest PJ'less streak for me since I started seeing them in 1998.

Thank the FSM for Temple of the Dog in LA last Fall as I at least got to see 4 of the 5 members play!

I skipped last year's debut Ohana fest and was planning on skipping this year's too (this year is turning out to be a very busy and expensive non PJ concert year for me), but I'm having second thoughts.  Seeing TOTD then Ed solo within a  year is pretty much equal to one PJ show, right?   =)

Yeah, I enjoyed more when they'd release an album, then do 2 or 3 legs of a solid tour supporting it, hitting up a fair amount of the country and going abroad when they were able. When they'd do an album/tour, then we'd not hear much from them for a year or two until it got close to the next album release, it made me excited and anticipate the next round so much more. The way they space apart shows now, without any new music behind them and hitting the same regions over and over, it's hard to get as excited anymore. Listening to bootlegs over the last few years, other than a few oddballs thrown in, the setlists have become a little stale as well - with too many covers. I don't want to come off ungrateful though - I AM happy that they're still a band, and they have the right to maintain themselves inside and outside of the band at whatever pace they see fit - but that's just my honest assessment of "then vs. now". I really dig the majority of their side project stuff as well. It's just a little disappointing sometimes that the website has become more of a place for e-commerce than a place to find any real news or anything creative or substantive going on.

I REALLY hope that for the next album, they throw caution to the wind and give us a complete departure from the last couple of albums - something that made me feel the way No Code and Binaural did. And I hope they play a show in my neck of the woods. :)
