I despised this album and said I actually wasted money on a PJ album...
Two years later...I'm dead wrong!!! What an awesome album- all because of this show which they played 6 songs of PJ...

??? They only played (in order) big wave, gone and comatose at hartford. Are you talking about hartford 06?

WTF??? I was doing some setlist mathematics on the shows I attended...much have messed up somewhere...but that that's way off. LOL

they did 6 during the New England shows...maybe that what I was evaluating.

I would put Hartford into my top 3 shows, with Ottawa '05 and Halifax '05. The crowd was awesome, but the band's energy throughout the entire show was what stood out for me. They never stopped the whole time they were up there. I'll take a great setlist over a great crowd any day, but I think Hartford had the right mixture of both.

    Shows:

    Montreal 2003
    Boston (1&2) 2004
    Montreal 2005
    Ottawa 2005
    Halifax 2005
    Boston (1&2) 2006
    Hartford 2008
    Mansfield (1&2)2008
  • The Hartford show was my personal favorite of the shows that I saw on this tour. When Eddie told the crowd they were gonna ease into things and they busted into Breakerfall, a lot of people could tell it was gonna be a helluva night. It's absolutely true that the crowd didn't even touch the Boston crowds, but god damn, did the fellas ever put on a tasty show. The only way to describe those encores is EPIC. I think it had as much to do with the way the setlist was arranged as well. Even Flow in the first encore, DTE in the second...it was just an incredible show.

Sorry for the rant, that was the first time I've attempted to write anything about that beautiful night...its kinda overwhelming.
  • i cant put into words how incredible this show was. i did camden 1, d.c. both gardens (sat front fucking row for night 2) and hartford buried all of those shows. the crowd from where i was that night (row 16) was intense and almost as on fire as the band was.
people said one of two things before this show. it was either going to be the worst show of the tour or the sleeper show of the tour (the surprise in other words). both ideas were wrong. this was THE show of the tour. Bonnaroo aside, this being a pure PJ show, ill never forget that night and once i get the boot ill prob wear it out in a week.
this was my 23rd show. ive seen them do 5 of their last 6 garden shows. i saw them in boston and i was there for philly 05. this show blew up my top 5 and its gonna be damn hard for me to conclude that this was not THE best pearl jam show ive been to.

Hartford indeed was awesome. For me the crowd makes a huge difference. In Mansfield, although many have an amazing experience with the crowd, I was surrounded by pretty dull fans (and some drunk idiots). I loved the show but Hartford for me had an incredible setlist, and I was surrounded by awesome people dancing from start to finish. That increased the energy, the communion and the overall experience vastly. A couple on the last show of a five show tour from New York City and a bunch of cool jammers in front and behind, loving the setlist, high fives all around, all of us knowing what a special night it was as it unfolded. Blood was definately the highlight for me. I had wanted to see that song and the version they kicked out was UNFREAKEN BELIEVABLE! The solo for Porch blew my mind to smithereens. I can't wait to hear the boot. If the boot is as good as I remember it then this was the best show I have seen out of five. By that I mean the boot would confirm that I did not hear any screw ups or missed notes - nothing short of perfection from start to finish.
I also keep in mind that this band is stratospheric and immeasurable.

Considering a show to be "epic" or "legendary" completely depends on the experience somebody had at the show. Example: I was at Hartford but missed the first 5 songs (Can't Keep, Breakerfall, Last Exit, God's Dice, All Night) due to the enormous 10c line, so that certainly changes my perception of the show despite the fact that I had 10th row lottery seats but I still missed the first 5 songs which I had never heard any of live before. My point being, how good of an experience you have makes or doesnt make a show epic/legendary, not the set list they played.

Hartford was a fuckin kickass motherfuckin show.

    Couldn't believe they topped Bonnaroo!
Canada, says Ament, holds a special place in the band's heart because of its international policies and its decision to stay out of the war in Iraq.

  • Having been to 11 shows total, including msg1&2, and mansfield 1, the hartford show was great, the setlist was killer....but the energy at msg is always a step above.....well except for that monumental pause during betterman at mansfield1....cant wait to hear that bootie....happy4th 2 all...

I wasn't there, so I can't say anything about the band's energy or the crowd, but for my personal taste, the setlist is overhyped. I actually like the setlist at Columbia much better (Red Mosquito, Present Tense, Whipping, I Got Shit, WMA, Education, Footsteps, etc.) But with all this talk, you guys might just convince me to buck up and buy the Hartford boot.

Columbia and Hartford were my two favorite sets of the show and after being at Hartford and listening to Columbia 3 times now let me tell you...

    Get both.

Both have great songs and the sets are put together awesomely.

The crowd at Hartford DESTROYED Mansfield I (please don't cite the 90 seconds during betterman as a great crowd, that was a great MOMENT)

And Yes, I was at both

I was at both and I enjoyed the set list at Hartford more, but you are dreaming if you think the crowd was louder at Hartford.

    It wasn't even close.

Mansfield II was a great crowd

Mansfield I was maybe the weakest of the 16 PJ shows I have seen.

It amazes me how people can say that was a great crowd, take away the betterman thing...

Maybe not louder, but we had more people who knew the words to lesser known songs. :P

Up & down, just a better (if not the best set list) -
Can't Keep, Breakerfall!!!!, Last Exit, Gods' Dice, All Night, Sad, Brain Of J, In Hiding, Not For You (Modern Girl tag), Jeremy, Gone, Immortality, Porch (funk intro) Garden, Better Man (2 seconds shorter than Mansfield crowd ;P), Comatose (the hardest version i've heard yet), Leash, Blood (Atomic Dog tag) Smile!!!!, Do The Evolution (full crowd sing-a-along), Fuckin' Up, Yellow Ledbetter (Little Wing tag)

any closer to perfection, then we'd all be dead & gone to heaven :D

I thought the crowd was dead as well. I don't understand how these people can say Mansfield 1 was electric (minus betterman pause)..I am starting to wonder if they were at the same show as I was.

Definitely in my top 3 shows with The Gorge 05 and Murfreesboro 94. So many tunes I'd never seen before with one of the best sounding concerts I've ever been to. Just an awesome night.

I do think Mansfield 1 was the loudest crowd I've ever been a part of, tho. And it would be even without Betterman.
