When to take my daughter to her first show?

Let me start by saying I've been to hundreds of shows. I've seen young & old to shows of bands from a wide range. That being said, my 6 1/2 year old daughter loves PJ & Eddie. She has her own copy of Lighting Bolt on vinyl that she plays on her record player for cryin' out loud. One day she asked, "Daddy, when will I get to see Pearl Jam?" My wife and I both are up in the air; I feel she is a bit too young that it might be too much and she won't appreciate it. I hope that they will keep playing live for the next 5 years or so, I think 10/11 would be a good age. I just don't want her to miss out on the PJ experience.

What is the age you first took your kid/nephew or niece/cousin to a show? Am I off on my thinking of waiting till 10?

I'd say take her. I was 8 when Nirvana played Reading in 92 and my parents held off. I never got chance to see them and it tortures me ever since. I had tickets to see them in 94 but everyone knows what happened. She'll love it and if she doesn't she can always go when she's older and understands more.

If your daughters way into it take her. Just make sure you by youth size, over ear hearing protection. I've spent the last 13 years of my life working on tour with bands, and one of the worst things I see is parents bringing kids with no proper hearing protection.

She might still be a little young, but why deny a child of something they love?

Just make sure she gets some rest before the long night. Would suck for you to miss the show, because somebody gets tired and wants to go home. See that all the time.

took our daughter to her PJ show when she was 13. The only thing I bring up that could may be worrisome to you is the pot smokers. Of course I had 2 of them if front of us when we took her. So as long as that don't bother you or that potential is there...I say take her.
The 2 people in front of us that were smoking were pretty cool about things after I had a chat with them. They just tended to blow the smoke in a different direction, when they first lit up, the smoke drifted right into my daughter's face...not good

My kids haven't seen Pearl Jam, but my daughter is 8 and she has seen KISS twice. She was 4 (easy open air show in a park, early showtime) and 7 (great seats). Her brother was also 4 last year when we saw them. :-)

I say take her is she really loves the band! I'm surely going to take my kids to many gigs in years to come. IF ONLY, Pearl Jam would play here in Finland one day...

Such a great question. Both of my kids are HUGE PJ fans (I guess I might have something to do with that). I took my daughter who at the time was 12, now 13 to one of the Lightning Bolt shows. It was her 2nd major show (U2 when she was 10) and this one was a bit eye opening.

We had floor seats right behind GA. She had beer spilled on her and a bowl was being passed by the people 2 seats away from us. She handled it like a champ and it was all about the music just me, her and PJ. Needless to say she can't wait for her next show!

I think 10 or 11 would be an appropriate age, as you said.

Wait til she can handle a long show. 6 is way too young! Think of her welfare.

My daughter is going to both upcoming Amsterdam shows. She is a 9 year-old. I am probably crazy for taking her. But it is great to be able to share something I love with her. :x

My son is ten and I plan on taking him to Cincinnati with me. I'm worried if i don't take this opportunity I might miss out on another chance to take him to a PJ concert.

I've taken both my kids to Dave shows before, but this summer we are going to be in the pit at VA Beach. They are 12 and 15, so plenty old enough. Should be quite the experience. My 12 year old is dying to see PJ, but this tour is too inconvenient because of the locations. Next time they are on the east coast, he'll get his chance.
  • The most opportune time to capitalize on this is in a familiar place. If it's in your hometown, go for it. Just head home if it doesn't work out for whatever reason. I would also recommend getting reserved seats. Too young at 6 1/2? Maybe. You won't know until you try. My guess is, if she is listening to PJ on vinyl now- I'm guessing she will she replay seeing the songs live every time she hears them. She could remember this for the rest of her life, you won't know if you don't take her. BTW- my wife took our son to see Imagine Dragons at age 5.

My son and I (he's 10) are going to see Ten tomorrow night here in Baltimore. He is SUPER excited. Didn't take him to any of the LB Tour shows like I did my daughter but he is still pumped to hear PJ songs live and in person...even if it isn't EdVed on the mic.

Bottom ine is, you know your kid and what they can handle. As long as you're with them I think any age is cool.
