Must have 2008/09 boots

mcgruff10mcgruff10 New Jersey Posts: 28,729
Trying to expand my collection. I already have the dc, msg, and philly shows in 08. For 09 all I have is the spectrum run (which for some reason I never listen too). Any other suggestions? Thanks

The 2008 Bonnaroo show is excellent, and i really like Berlin, San Diego & LA3 from 2009.

  • 2008 Mansfield night one and Manchester have their moments, but MSG shows are the best.
2009 I like the Chicago shows and the Rotterdam bootleg has a very good vibe. Christchurch is a nice one as well.

2008 Hartford. It's the show of the tour. I may seem biased because I was there but I've heard every single boot and this is legit the best. Get through the mistakes on Can't Keep and DTE and enjoy the amazing set.

  • Well, the first thing to do is listen to the Philly shows!

    San Diego is amazing also.

Hey mate, I only did the Brisbane and Melbourne shows in 09' but I love those 2 boots. Great sets and some rare highlights for me were, Needle and the damage done (only played 3 times) Throw your arms around me (played 20 times only 8 outside of australia) If you want blood you've got it (only time played) Brother (only played 8 times) Force of nature (only played 11 times) Gonna see my friend (only played 13 times) also present tense is one of my favourite live tracks (love the chorus).

I have personally contended that the 2008 and 2009 boots are by far the poorest quality of the entire PJ live catalog compared to the other tours, but there are still some good ones out there.

My personal favorites from those tours are Hartford 2008, Berlin 2009, San Diego 2009, and LA 3 and LA 4 2009 to be good. Hartford 2008 really is a great boot in my opinion. Bonnaroo is also solid, but I feel overrrated at times as well. I really do feel the Philly 2009 shows are massively overrated. If you collect boots of course the box set is worth owning, but I just feel those shows are hugely overrated. Virginia Beach 2008 I feel is a massively underrated boot and one of the better 2008 boots.

You know yled2 I thought I was the only one thought 2008 sounded like shit. Man I put a 2003 boot on yesterday, holy shit! It s like crystal clear!
I think my plan is to get two boots from 08 and 09 and then move into getting more from 2010.

The 2008 and 2009 boots are almost unbearable to listen to when compared to the quality of the rest of the PJ live catalog! 2000, 2003, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 are almost perfect live recordings. I would say the most recent years have been the best quality from a sound and mixing stand point, but I wish they would mix the crowd a little higher like the 2000 and 2003 boots. I really do enjoy to "feel" the crowd on a boot, and I feel like they could do just a slightly better job mixing the crowd up a little on the 2010-2013 boots. Other than that, the sound quality is absolutely fantastic.

In terms of boot choices from 2008 and 2009, I would say my personal top two favorites for each year as follows.

    2008
Hartford and Virginia Beach from 2008. Hartford 2008 is in my top 20 boots collectively. It really is an excellent boot from 2008, and the show itself is top notch. Amazing energy from the band and crowd, as always in Hartford. I also believe Jeff made the set list for that show, and it's got a fantastic flow to it. Virginia Beach is another very good recording from 2008, and sort of a melancholy show and I love the vibe from the band that night. The show was at an amphitheater and Ed comments on the full moon that night numerous times. Bonnaroo, as overrated as I think it can be, is close to those as well.

    2009
Berlin and San Diego would be my top two boots. As always, PJ delivers another amazing performance in Berlin at Wuhlheide. Very good set list and flow, with a good number of rarities mixed in and the performance to match. Why Go opens the show and is one of my favorite versions of the song, very blistering. San Diego is another good recording and great performance. It's almost like a hometown show for Ed and Matt, and the band is in an exceptionally great mood throughout the show. Family members and Ed and Matt's early music teachers and mentors are in attendance. Matt's teacher gets to play drums and Ed's teacher gets to play guitar on Little Wing. Pretty cool and a good performance to match. It's a much more heart felt show than usual.

Hope that helps, and yes, I am a fucking bootleg nerd!

No joke and no disagreements on that!

Outside of the boots you already have from 2010, my favorite is Lisbon. Very good boot. Kind of a shorter show, but last show of the tour and probably the best crowd of all the 2010 shows. Nothing really jumps out at you from a set list stand point, but it's a very good boot.

Boston also gets a lot of love from a lot of people. It's another good one and jam packed full of rarities.

    IMO 2010

    1 MSG 2
    2 Boston
    3 MSG 1

    Easily top 3

Boston 2010 is an absolute must own. Classic.
  • Austin 2009 ACL. Most shy away from festival setlist cause they "don't play as many songs" or "not enough rarities". Austin 2009 will give you a killer Red Mosquito w/Ben Harper and an amazing cover of Mountain Song with Perry Ferral himself.
  • Quite surprised to find so little love for MSG 2008.

All night from night 1 is amazing, Who you are and WMA from night 2 are heavenly.
Rats is a jewel, Faithfull is very nive, Garden beautifull and Corduroy night 2 is just great.
And there are many more nice versions on those two boots.
That's not even talking about the vibe.
In my opinion the MSG 2008 shows are far better than the 2010 shows when it comes to the actual preformance of the band.

All the official boots from 2000 are amazing compared to the shitty AUD recordings some of us grew up on in the 90s.
That being said, the 03' shows are the best of the bunch. Not sure who/what/how, but just flat out unmatched in all areas of recording a rock band. Want an 03' show that just tears off the roof? St.Louis.

I went to both msg shows in 08 and never listen to those boots. In fact I've been to every msg show pj had ever played and those two 08 shows are at the bottom for me.
Yeah 2000 boots are amazing. I need 11 more to complete my collection. In a move all of my European boots from that year got thrown out so I had to start from scratch.
