Better bootleg: vault #3 or melbourne 3/5/98?

Just listened to both back to back. I have to say, I gotta go with the melbourne show. this show seems to have a heck of a lot more energy plus I think the set list is a lot better. Anybody else?

I don't know about the vault #3, I have ordered it and as soon as Nugs gets it's sh.. sorted out I'll know.
However I have had the Melbourne bootleg for 15 years and I must say it is one that has you returning to it.
Great energy from both the crowd as the band. The setlist is a bit radio friendly, but very theight.

Always loved 3/5/98. In My Tree is amazing

washington. only because of that version of present tense, so it just pips melbourne.

having said that, most shows from 98, if released and mixed from soundboard, would qualify as a good vault show.
Yeh I've seen Pearl Jam, too. But I can't remember the dates.

98 was a fantastic year for pearl jam. Looking back I didn't see one bad show from them that year out of the eight times I saw them.

    I agree.

I'm pretty sure there's enough space for both of these epic shows in our lives?

That Immortality from Melbourne is as good as PJ gets.

Don't forget Porch from Melbourne... one of the top highlights of my PJ live experience. Mike's solo... holy crap. House lights brought on for the final chorus. "I'm gonna go get hammered... good night!"

Yep, definitely an awesome release, hailhail, in my tree from melbourne III 98. But immortality is amazing, the solo in porch that night is unique and incredible. Not to mention the better slow jam start compared to the way they play it now.

Both great shows, but since I was at the DC show and odds are slim I'll be at another 3,000 seat PJ show...DC gets my vote.

'98 was a very, very fun PJ year

I am finally listening to Vault#3, I still can't really judge, but I'll tell you this much; Present tense really is magnificed.
I think I'll won't find a better version amongst the ones I have. Jeez what a gem.

Yes he does, and it is great to have a bootleg in good sound quality where he plays.
It's also funny to see the way he plays In my tree. I think Matt's a better technical drummer, but he seldom gets In my tree to work the way Jack does here. Especially the drumintro never really comes out as good when Matt plays it.

  • Love the Melbourne LP, vault #3 is still in the mail.

But I'm sooooooo bummed that Brain of J and Crazy Mary were left of the 3/5/98 Melbourne vinyl boot, especially since Brain of J is another of those tunes that just suits Jack's style/sound moreso than Matt's, imo.

Crazy Mary from that show is only a small clip but still nice to hear

Concur with the above, I was there at the DC show as well!!

You don't mis that much with Crazy Mary.
I is just a tease real, not a full version.

That Seattle show is good, but I find the soundboard recording to be very sterile.

98 Melbourne is great, but according to the PJ20 book, he was in the throws of an intense manic episode and maybe just knowing that much, much later, I can hear a tired drummer in that show. 98' DC seemed more up energy-wise.

Compaired with the other two we are talking about yes.
Still is better in sound quality than many others I've found from that year.
