predictable setlists???

say it aint so pj!!!

saw both brooklyn and philly shows and for the first time ever (seen them 22 times) there were numerous times i knew what song was coming next. knew pendulum was opening. knew either elderly woman or nothingman was gonna be the last slow song played at the start. knew lightning bolt and mind your manners were gonna be played back to back after elderly woman or nothingman, or corduroy played between them. knew sirens was gonna be played about 11 or 12 songs in. knew yellow moon would be the 2nd or 3rd song played after 1st encore. knew porch would close the first encore cause of the ed swinging shtick which i dont like.

i know they still do a good job of mixing it up, but whenever i saw them before i literally never knew what was coming next. they could and would play any song anywhere at anytime. why do the lightning bolt songs all have a specific place in the setlist? infallible is also always played towards the end of the 1st set. and again i dont like porch being locked in to end the first encore, theyve never played a certain song every night cause of a lighting effect or stage gimmick, why start now? thats a u2 thing not pj.

I would suggest you see less shows on a tour :lol::lol::lol:

There is always a certain predictability with some songs, Even Flow is generally always played 30 minutes into the show for example. Personally I feel the mix in the setlists is pretty much spot on and if certain songs are played in specific slots then so it be. I wish I could have seen 4 Pearl Jam shows in the last night.....
    2000: Manchester
    2006: Dublin; Leeds; Arnhem
    2007: London
    2009: Manchester
    2012: Manchester I & II : EV Manchester : Soundgarden Shepherds Bush
2013: Brad Manchester : Soundgarden Manchester
2014: Amsterdam I & II; Berlin; Leeds; Milton Keynes
2018: Berlin; London II; Boston II

Relatively speaking to other bands who play the same exact songs in same order every night, PJ is very unpredictable.

Relative to themselves they are a bit predictable lately. I hated Pendulum back to back nights in Brooklyn, was hoping night two they would come out and kick some ass like MSG 2 2010.

How could anyone be upset after just seeing Brooklyn I + II and Philly I + II. That is the real question here.

It is an album tour, so of course we are going to hear the same songs. I agree though that Pearl Jam is trying a different setlist model where they start slow and then slow it down to start the first encore. THey probably are using it to pace themselves but maybe Ed is experimenting with the setlists.

All I know is I am anxiously hoping Fatal and Other Side are saved for future shows and not Hartford. If I am anxious about Fatal and Other Side then the band is pulling out all the songs for this tour.

this has been a trend for a while . maybe you just didn't notice. there seems to be a group of songs they play . if you go to three shows or four in a row you are going to see quite a few songs 3 and four times and even more twice with some rarities sprinkled in here and there. it takes too many shows to see those different songs. they are still better than most bands in mixing up their set lists but within their context have become predictable. in 03 at the dte center in michigan 2 shows 61 songs 1 the same. even the radio people were blown away the next day by this. i love their music but just wish it would be more like that. i understand they have a new album to promote but even on the avocado tour they didn't play the same songs off the album every night. between the hits and the new album it doesn't leave a lot of room for more variance.

That was like 7 songs you mentioned out of shows with 34 songs (BK had 31).

    Here's what was not predictable:

    - Chloe/Crown in main set
    - Oceans to open encore
    - Brain of J and Hail Hail not in very beginning of set
    - 1/2 Full
    - A ten song first encore
    - Eruption
    - Sleight of Hand
    - Parachutes
    - Leaving Here
    - Amongst the Waves
    - Satan's Bed
    - Untitled --> MFC
    - DTE --> Go --> Porch
    - All those Yesterdays!!!!

And all those songs in predictable slots are fantastic every time

    +100!

If you are unhappy with the shows, try doing less next time.

People are unhappy when they don't tour.
When they do tour, they must complain.

Just be greatful to have them still playing music after 23 years. That's all that I care about.

They could play all of ten every night and I'd still attend. But that's just me I guess.

After seeing them 30 times... this is something I've learned to never complain about... the ONE time I was a tad bummed w/ a setlist... well an opener... was MSG 03... they played Crazy Mary night 1 in the encore but opened with it night 2... I was hoping for something else as an opener but the rest of the show was just so good I couldn't complain.

They opened Worcester 1 with Release --> Long Road.

They played Fatal and Other Side on back to back nights.

    Their setlists are not predictable.

I remember it well. I was totally let down for about a minute when they kicked into Crazy Mary. Luckily the show was awesome. I am rarely (almost never) bummed out at a PJ show...but that moment stands out for sure. You could hear a collective "huh?" from the crowd.

Pendulum > Three mellow songs > Rest of the first set. > Encore Break > Sit-down acoustic set > Four hard rockers > Encore Break > Covers/Hard Rockers/Alive > Songs with house lights up

That's the basic formula at this point. Certainly they can surprise you with song placements. But this, at least for right now, is the setlist structure.

I understand the OP's post and opinion. I was also at BK 1&2 and PHL 1&2 and it was the first time in any multi-concert run that I can recall knowing what was coming next.

Of course we are STILL talking about the premier touring band, and we are STILL talking about amazing live experiences, but that does not detract from the fact that you can predict when and in what sequence certain songs are played (e.g., Pendulum to open, LB->MYM, Porch to close set or encore, with Eddie climbing onto light).

    An accurate observation...
37 PJ Shows, 3 EV Shows, 1134 Total Songs, 24 Different Openers, 9 Different Closers, 252 Unique Songs (never enough)

It blew my mind. There is a great youtube clip of this floating around where you can see Stone turn to Eddie at the end with a smile and "Wow!"
