Target Backspacer defected?

A friend who works at a Target store and is not the most reliable news source told me they threw the rest of the copies of Backspacer in the compactor. He said they did that since they were a Target exclusive, so they couldn't be sold anywhere else. I tend to believe this, since I didn't see anymore copies out at that store, and I know Best Buy marked Chinese Democracy down to like $2 last year. I already have had two copies of Backspacer, but surely I could have found a better use than throwing them away.
