I will probly get told off by those who know much more about these things, but in that situation first off I would remove the belt and sprinkle it with unscented talcum powder , spread it thinly and evenly around the belt with fingers and then try again!
If no good, next I would try a new belt (simplest and cheapest variable)

It has a turny thing on the back of the tonearm for coin weight.......I asked my wife if we have any baby powder and she yelled at me for not giving her a baby..

actually, that was a little joke from my college days....nickles and dimes on the tonearm to keep our thrashed records from skipping.
If I had known then what I know now...

i'm having trouble too...the arm on my record player is stuck hovering over the turn table. i can't get it back to my resting position unless i force it, and i know i shouldn't do that...i don't know how to take the arm off either to try to fix the situation myself. the turn table does turn so i could still use it, though i haven't because i don't want to risk anything. it's a Crosley CR-79 if that is of any help

Simple thing to try - can you lower the arm onto the record, then pick it up by hand from there and move it back to rest without feeling the resistance?
Failing that it might be wise to find a sympathetic local hi-fi store you will look at it and advise you. I think you may be at risk of damaging your deck without proper advice - there are honest people out there who won't charge you anything if the problem is just straightforward

Christ, you brought a turntable into the house - isn't that enough?? Some women are never satisfied....
Yeah, baby powder - common for belts to lose friction

You can also try turning the platter ten times or so by hand..Some times the auto return becomes disengaged and this puts it back in place on some turntables.

it's not an auto return...however, perhaps turning it 10 times might release it's grip? i'll try that and what the other guy said above...thanks!
