Of The Earth for PJ is what Mountain Song was for Janes Addi

On the second listen thru of Of The Earth, it's great to hear Matt Cameron shine on what he's best at - playing tom-centric songs. It sounds so heavy, dark, dry and driven. It's truly a "pearl garden" song. :D

As much as I have criticized MC for how he's altered the early songs of PJ, he shines amazingly bright on his originals and this has a similar feel to one of my favorite songs, Mountain Song by Jane's Addiction, with hint of Stop in there and a softer ending. Lots of great change-ups. And nice to hear a lot of gruff vocals too. This will be a hell of a motivating song. A new favorite for sure!

I don't listen to Janes Addiction, so I'm not familiar w/ Mountain Song...

But all I keep hearing in this track is the Doors.

    PS: I love it

See, this is why I miss singles w/ honest-to-god b-sides. IIRC, wasn't there was a brief rumor that Of the Earth was going to be the b-side to WWS (???)

To me, it sounds like "Marker in the Sand" with a part of "Porch" stuck in the middle with an "Army Reserve" ending. So to me, it totally sounds like Avocado era. I think they had Porch in mind when doing the music to Severed Hand. It's not like Better Days where there's a lot of debate as to its origins. This one totally sounds Avocado.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

There isn't enough prozac in this song for it to come from the backspacer sessions. It's way too aggressive.

I played this for my wife tonight. 5 seconds into it, she says "You know why you like this so much, don't you?"

I had no idea what she was talking about.

She brought up my playlist and started Porch, my all time fave.

Now that I listen to it, yah... using the word "influence" is like saying Scott Stapp's vocal delivery was influenced by Ed (oh SNAP! a creed reference!)

Still enjoy the song, tho. :)

Great song!!! Sounds like a live staple. Hopefully they don't cut out the middle for the studio version. Mike said on January 1st they'd be playing new songs in Europe. So hopefully their is more to come!

When I first heard it, I thought it sounded like a Rush song a little. It has a very progressive sound to it that PJ never steps into. Especially when the solo kicks in, the beat totally changes out of nowhere. Can anyone tell what the time signatures are? I'm terrible at that but it doesn't sound like a straight 4/4 song.

Big props to the band for writing this song. This song really shows how the bands talent has evolved, and I bet alot of that has to do with Matts odd style of playing. Just when I thought they were done writing long, heavy and technical songs (not they really ever did) they make this song. I just really hope they make a studio version that isn't any shorter.

Seems RUSH like with the time changes and stops and whatnot. Also hear some WHO thrown in for good measure. Love to see an EP with 5 new Euro songs IMO

I never learned time signatures but I'd be interested to hear.

...and I'd give the majority of the credit to Matt Cameron on this song. If he weren't in the band, this song would not be around. It's carried by his style of playing.

    :D

The other day I was told to listen to Rush, apparently I would like the style of drumming.
Then I heard this song, and all I was listening for, when hearing it first time, was drumming and bass, and I was blown away. More odd time signatures, please (if that is the right term). For all I care, Ed could wail aaaoooouuu and eeeeee, I'll be happy. And growl, that was great. Was a little bugged by Who influenced singing of 'of the earth' line, now it is non grating anymore, imo, off course.
Very grateful that they are putting out stuff like this.

Before I read all the other comments, and on first listen, that sounds like absolute classic Pearl Jam. Can't wait to hear that officially released! Thanks for the link. I'm hearing Matt, but also enjoying Mike's soloing.

Indeed! :D Actually many of the songs Matt has written have been very good, especially new ones. MC has a very particular drumming style which is pretty up-front from the rest of the instruments. While the early stuff I don't like him playing at all, the newer stuff he's been creating with the band is great and fitting of his style, and this song is freakin' amazing. Can't wait to hear a polished version of it!!

Is it just me or does the jam in the middle of this one resemble November Hotel by Mike's own Mad Season?

now the whole jam sounds like porch. and the main riff like a slowed down severed hand.

    still love it
