Enjoy! Saw them in June and it was unbelievably awesome. Seeing PJ next Tuesday at the same venue but would be just as happy if it was KOL again.

Kings of Leon. Aug. 12, 2009. Rexall Place.
By Sandra Sperounes 08-13-2009 COMMENTS(13) Plugged In
Filed under: Coldplay, Kings of Leon, The Whigs
If Rush is rock ‘n’ roll for boys, Kings of Leon is rock ‘n’ roll for girls. “Caleb Followill’s voice is pure sex,” gushed one of my female friends. “He’s going to be my boyfriend,” said another during the course of Wednesday’s show at Rexall Place. “Meh,” said my male cousin. “They sound like Coldplay.”

Uh uh. Not only do they not sound remotely like Coldplay, the southern rockers don’t have the same stage presence. While Chris Martin and his bandmates bounced around like hyper children at their recent Rexall show, Caleb and his brothers – bassist Jared, drummer Nathan - and cousin/guitarist Matthew, brooded and barely moved as they played searing, sensual and synthy numbers from their first four albums.

As passionate and primal as songs such as Sex on Fire and Closer are, Kings of Leon aren’t exactly the most expressive performers. (Luckily, they had a eye-popping light show and fast-edit visuals to make them look more exciting.) They didn’t beg for applause – a la Bono or Billie Joe Armstrong – nor did they even look like they were losing themselves in their own music.

Then again, the Followills were plagued with technical issues during Wednesday’s show. Particulary Caleb, who was having troubles with his in-ear monitors and couldn’t hear his vocals or guitar. As the first half of their two-hour set progressed, he grew increasingly frustrated, but by the 10th song, Crawl, he started to relax. “All I have in my ears is you guys screaming, so I can’t be mad, right?” he said.

Right. Unfortunately, Caleb didn’t stop there. He repeated his complaints over and over again, like a reluctant patient who finally decides to open up to his psychiatrist. “I’m sorry if it seems like I have an attitude,” he said. “You guys are (expletive) phenomenal.”

In hindsight, he didn’t have to make such a big deal about his technical issues. (They didn’t affect the sound in Rexall.) His raspy – almost soul-scraping - growls still came off as pure sex and the Followills still managed to deliver a tight and transcendental show for 13,000 swooning girls and fist-pumping guys.

As is expected from musicians born in Tennessee and Oklahoma, their songs were sludgy and filled with guitar squalls, but Kings of Leon aren’t your average southern rockers. They also played with disco-rock rhythms (My Party, California Waiting), synths, and ‘90s alt-rock guitar chords. Highlights included: Closer, an intoxicating tumble-in-the-sheets number with sci-fi beats; Charmer, a spooky shrieker which sounded like a mix between The Pixies and Bob Mould; and Knocked Up, an unusually sensual tune about pregnancy.

Watching Caleb warm up to the crowd, despite his technical issues, was also a highlight – and in a way, even more rewarding than Coldplay’s love-in. Kings of Leon’s set could’ve easily descended into anger and chaos. (Caleb walked off the stage at one point, leading Jared to quip: “He’s going to throw up. He’ll be back shortly.” He was.)

Yet for all of Caleb’s complaints, he also repeatedly expressed his genuine love for his fans – “That’s one of the best crowds we’ve ever seen … I want to stay in Edmonton!” - and even the opening act, The Whigs, a band of rockers Athens, Georgia, with a few interesting tricks. (Glowing Beatlesque organs, boppy mod rhythms.)

I don’t think Edmonton will have to wait another four albums to see these Kings again.

Went to the show tonight in Calgary and gotta say I was really impressed. It was sold out to the rafters and the crowd was really loud and energetic. They played for just short of two hours and mixed a lot of good old stuff (Molly's Chamber, Red Morning Light, California Waiting, Milk) with the new. The band seemed to be really impressed with the crowds from the last couple nights as Caleb commented on it more than once and rather sincerely. His voice sounded incredible live and gave me a new respect for his singing. He did bolt from the stage about halfway through the set to go and puke as I guess he does pretty much every show.

Definitely got a lot more out of that show than I was expecting and wouldn't hesitate to see them again!
E agora? Faz xixi na mão e deita fora!
