"Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has said recording another album would "kill" the band because making records has become a "real drag" to them."

as long as they keep making music and touring - I am fine with it. Won't have to wait as long to hear new stuff...

they've said things like this before...
i believe they mentioned shortly after recording In Rainbows that they'd like to try to release EPs instead of full length albums.

I can name about 1000 bands I wished would go with this route, but Radiohead isn't one of them

I don't know if this is the beginning of the end of the album as we know it...? I know Radiohead are just one band, but sometimes I wonder whether other artists are gonna follow suit.

oh so now theyre "too cool" to do their "job"

i love radiohead but come on! this isnt the 90's... pretending not to care doesnt make you "cooler"... especially not when it comes to your music... which your fans expect you to keep making... just break up if thats how you feel...

or maybe theyre just SOOO innovative that they can telepathically transmit their new songs to their fans... gimme a fuckin break... they proved they can distribute their material however they want and still make it financially viable... if they still plan to continue as a band then why the hell not record what youre working on... itd be like an author not publishing/distributing his/her work and only doing public readings at local bookstores

doesnt tarnish how great their body of work has been but... SHUT UP AND ENTERTAIN ME

I love whenever Thom gives an interview, they're always interesting.

I predict that Radiohead are going to do several EPs before doing a full-length album again. I think an EP would work well for them, particularly if they're centered around particular styles: the orchestral EP, the heavy, dissonant EP, the subdued, laid-back EP.

Maybe the "real drag" is Thom Yorke. I've never heard of such a pretentious douche in my life. Live music depresses him. Making albums depresses him. Selling albums depresses him. Hit songs depress him. Fans liking his music depresses him. Crowds that aren't rocking out because he played 4 straight solo piano ballads depress him. If being a successful musician is such a burden upon him, why not quit and stay home and cry by himself. This guy is the real drag. I honestly believe the only reason he hasn't killed himself is that Kurt Cobain already did and he won't get any cool points for being a copycat... he's got to find a new, innovative way out.

    BINGO

of all the bands to come out of the 90's that i have loved im glad i chose PJ to obsessively follow

ed is the only frontman with the least bit humility / sanity left after all this time

    chris - douche
    kurt - dead
    billy - douche
    layne - dead
    thom - douche
trent - exception to this rule :D

if youre simply deciding to switch to shorter EPs vs. full length albums then thats not really something worth announcing... im fine with that artistic decision but dont make some big fuckin fuss over it

I think the problem is that the band members are such perfectionists that they end up hating each other by the time the album they were recording is released.

I don't think Thom is being a douche, he makes some good points. Making several EPs instead of an album allows for more material in a shorter timeframe. It's about productivity.

Didn't their bassist (I own all 7 of their albums and don't know his name - gah) say they were in the studio with Nigel Godrich and were working on their next studio album?

yup. they were in the studio working on their next record last i heard. but this also isn't the first time that Thom (or any other band member) has said that they'd like to change how they record. so this isn't really "new" news.

Radiohead is better than Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, and Alice in Chains. Out of all the bands that came out of the 90s, they are the only one that is still extremely relevant

Talented people like Thom are weird, that is what makes them talented. Look at Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol, and just about every actor in Hollywood. These people are weird, but they are creative. That is why we spend money on their work and they become icons. Everyone isn't the same.

And I think the thread title is a bit misleading... he said they didn't want to jump into making another full-length album RIGHT AWAY. I'm all for a little experimentation. Radiohead is a great band (in spite of Thom's wonky eye) so the format of the music isn't important to me as long as they keep making it!

What a wonderful post. Thom Yorke needs to pull that huge fucking pole out of his ass and lighten up.
  • tcaporaletcaporale Posts: 1,577
The drummer, Phil Selway, pretty much debunked what Thom said anyway. In regards to the whole "the last album nearly killed us" comment, Phil said that "we always say that" and the band is actually in the studio right now.

You can never really take what Thom says at face value because he contradicts himself quite often.

On top of that, you should probably read the interview BBC sites, cause they got it wrong too. He just said they won't be working on a long-player anytime soon. I love how worked up you got over stuff Thom Yorke didn't even imply, much less say. I'm sure you'd be welcome disrupting health care town hall meetings.

Are you nuts? Trent and NIN are not relevant? They're as relevant and innovative as Radiohead. Nirvana and AIC are dead, so of course they're not 'relevant' in the same way as Radiohead. But both rival Radiohead's best stuff. Yeah, Radiohead tops Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins, but the latter was never that great and the former has a singer who has gone to the opposite extreme of Thom Yorke. It's not necessarily better or worse. PJ is irrelevant in terms of new music now, but as a live draw and elder statesmen, they have no peer. Nobody will look to Radiohead the way they do Bruce Springsteen or Neil Young or the Rolling Stones and now PJ. They'll look to them as a Lou Reed kind of figure... remarkable at times, but just as often missing the mark and as much about mystique as substance.
  • tcaporaletcaporale Posts: 1,577
I really don't think Radiohead "miss the mark" that often. All of their albums since The Bends have been excellent.

And Thom isn't nearly the asshole you guys are portraying him to be. Maybe back in '97 he was a certain way, but over the years he's lightened up considerably.
