  • the accusations of stealing need to be looked at, but its just like elvis. I have had major problems with elvis. He is refered to as the "king". To call him that, as Chuck D has suggested is a slap in the face to all the black bluesman and early rock and rollers who actually created rock music as we know it.

That said, Elvis's contribution to rock music is immeasurable. I also dont think he was racist. I think he genuinely loved and appreciated black music and culture.

Same goes for Plant and Page. Do you honestly think they are racist? I think both formed the band because they both loved the same type of music, the blues and early rock and roll singers. Its obvious, and Page and Plant have said as much, that they have deep respect for blues music.

It often seems like in plant and page interviews, they spend more time talking about their love of blind lemon jefferson or howlin wolf, than they do their own music.

I agree with this but to play devil's advocate, there's a difference between loving and being influnced by the blues and blatently ripping something off. I love Zeppelin so it's not like I get all mad about it. And snipping a riff or lyric here or there isn't a crime. But full-on plagarism like Dazed and Confused or The Lemon Song isn't cool.

I hear ya, but same thing goes for elvis. Its not like Hounddog and the other songs he played were necessarily songs he had come up with out of thin air. These were songs that, in many cases were already written, and recorded, by black blues artists.

Hendrix, Beatles and Stones.... Those guys made their name with the help of other peoples' tunes. The only thing they did different than Zep was credit properly.

On my list The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are tied for first place. After Pearl Jam retires, I do believe i will be adding them to the tie for first place also.

very true. but credit was given to the songwriters.

But I digress, I don't want to go from "devil's advocate" to "hater." In fact, if Page never took Dazed and Confused, I would have never even heard of Jake Holmes. And I've since become a fan. So when people say that Jake Holmes never got anything from Jimmy Page, he got at least one new fan...and probably more.

But apparently never any royalties, which probably would have meant more.
