One? Really? since the OP picked a GREAT album, I'll stick to it .... one ....

Some punk love for the Clash or my hometown Neighborhoods? Do I go with my college radio loves like REM or The Cure ... my metal days, Metallica? Queensryche? Black Sabbath (with Dio)???

    ugh.

    one?

i tihnk I got to go with ...

    Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

whew .... [lights up a cigarette] ... that was mind blowing.

(note, if London Calling was released 4 weeks later, thus, in 1980, that would have won out)

well it was released in december of 79...even rolling stone bypassed this fact in naming it the best album of the 80's ;):D

The best one..... Appetite For Destruction

Master of Puppets, the only only really kickass Metallica album......This one has gotten a bad rap recently with all the Death Magnetic comparison.

Boy by U2...or was that a 1979 release?

While Master of Puppets is awesome, don't let it take away from the true winner of Metallica's catalogue....Ride The Lightning. That album is Metallica's forgotten great..

Not even close for me. Sanitarium, Leper Messiah, and the title track trump every other Metallica album, imo. Fade to Black is good though.

Yeah, agreed. For me, Master Of Puppets, and Ride The Lightning are really the only two valuable Metallica albums..

I think Joshua Tree (U2) or In My Tribe (10000 Maniacs) are mine. I would have said London Calling too-especially Lost in the Supermarket-classic!

John Martyn - Grace and Danger

Okay, it was recorded in 1979, but it came out in 1980. That'll do for me, even if the eighties did technically commence on January 1st 1981.

I mean, that's somewhat underestandable ... you have to think between 1970 and 1989, 99.9% of it's play came in the 80s over the 70s.

Lots and lots of good ones, but if I have to choose one it's Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction.

Can't narrow it down to one, but...

All of R.E.M.'s 80's records, Pixies "Doolittle" and "Nothing's Shocking" by Jane's Addiction. Also "Scary Monsters" by Bowie and "Kick" by INXS.

Oh yeah, U2's "The Joshua Tree."

Edit: Seriously, I just played "Nothing's Shocking" for a friend tonight who had never heard it before!

Lots of good mentions. But the ones I likely listened to most in the 80's was

Oingo Boingo ~ Only a Lad

    followed closely by

    Madness ~ Absolutely
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Excellant, excellant call on "Abacab" and "Three Sides Live"....the artistic height of that band in the post-Gabriel era.

"Ghost in the Machine" is my favorite album by the Police...big fan back in the day....saw them live on that tour.

"So"....Peter Gabriel's big money making album, not my favorite of his...but glad to see him rake in the bucks.

"Unforgettable Fire" = My favorite U2 disc...despite never wanting to hear "Pride (In the Name of Love) ever again.

I would add King Crimson's "Three of a Perfect Pair," Rush's "Moving Pictures," and Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love."
