My friend and I recently got in an argument about this. Obviously the Beatles are at #1.

So, who is the second? We had it down to Led Zeppelin, the Who and Pink Floyd.

I said Zeppelin.

There is really no right answer...more like opinions. I would never put the Beatles @ #1. Maybe #1 most recognizable/influential...but when I think rock band, I don't really think of the Beatles.

I think that The Rolling Stones are worthy of being in this competition. In my eyes, they ARE rock and roll.

ditto....I certainly don't think of the Beatles when discussing rock bands. influential, absolutely yes (and I don't even like the Beatles...blasphemous, I know!)

That's not blasphemous, it's all a matter of taste. That's what music is good for. You like it or you don't. I like the Beatles...but I generally have to hold my tongue when I hear people speak about how brilliantly amazing they are.

In my honest opinion. There are musicians after The Beatles that have made much more impressive music to me. But like I said, the Beatles level of influence is pretty untouchable...

The Who, Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd are all good contenders. I'd like to throw another into the mix...definitely not the "greatest", but worth mentioning because of their impact. Black Sabbath.

You're right--it's just funny how people get about the Beatles, like they just can't understand why I don't care for them...not for lack of trying!!

Anyway, I think my vote would go to either Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin.

I meant to include the Rolling Stones in what I posted above.

"Greatest" in terms of influence and impact and whatnot. Taste is obviously subjective and can't compete. The Beatles aren't my favorite band (I do fucking love them though) but I think they're obviously the number one in terms of "greatness" in the sense we were discussing. And I shouldn't say arguing, but more talking about who holds the spot after the Beatles and we narrowed it down to either Zeppelin/Floyd/Who/Stones. Those 5 make up, in my opinion, the "Big 5" of rock & roll.

Sabbath is up there too, considering they (basically) invented an entire mainstream genre.

Obviously the Beatles not in a million years, I preferred the Beatles as individual musicians than the band together. My favorite was George Harrison and I would certainly put Led Zep above them.

I don't think the Who belong on that list. I think they're incredible overrated. They made one consistent album (Who's Next) and a great live album (Leeds). Other than that, all they can claim is two bloated and self-indulgently pretentious rock operas (Tommy and Quadrophenia) and a ton of crappy, uneven albums that had a few good singles.

How come people tend to get shit on if they don't name the Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, or The Beatles in these kinds of threads? I'm not talking particularly this one, but I've seen it elsewhere. If you don't think they're the best bands in the world, you automatically have a horrible taste in music. I personally only like roughly and album or two worth of stuff from each band.

But really, how do you judge who's the 'greatest'? There is no real template...we all judge who's the greatest based on our personal taste, but there is nothing out there that says "this band is better than this band because..."

    Queen.

Queen is a definite runner-up...but I never thought they were as consistant as the others being mentioned. Still gotta love Queen though.

What about Aerosmith...? Probably not the greatest...but they are one of the finest "rock and roll" bands...

I still contend that their first 4 - 5 albums stack up favorably against almost any band.

    2.) Rolling Stones
    3.) The Beatles
    4.) Pink Floyd
    5.) The Who
