Next to Pearl Jam the greatest artist ever is definately Neil Young. I have this arguement with people all of the time that Neil Young is a better song writer, singer, lyricist, and all around musician than Bob Dylan (that's right I just said that). A lot of people may disagree with me on that, but its just how I feel.

No one can play more different styles of music than Neil Young and still churn out classics while still being able to rock. This thread is for you Uncle Neil.

Bob Dylan is probably a better lyricist, but I give the other nods to Neil Young.

I wouldn't consider either the greatest though. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have that wrapped up pretty well.

I fucking love Neil Young though.

I agree that Zeppelin and the Beatles are the bee knees but they were many people...Neil Young and Bob Dylan were basically just one person doing their thing. And Bob Dylan may have been a better lyricist but not by much. I mean look at the lyrics to "Unknown Legend" or "Old Man" or even "Crime In The City" all awesome songs lyrically.

Oh no, not the Dylan vs. Young debate!

I like neil the most, but really it is just a matter of opinion.

I seem to connect more with Neil's lyrics. They hit me on a more personal level then bob's do overall.

    Both are great though.

bob has been making better music lately though.

neil still kicks his ass on guitar

Well, Dylan's the better artist, which is not anything near a knock on the greatness of Neil Young. Dylan's just a cultural icon, and his lyrics can be pretty amazing...his recent albums are still great, too. I remember there being a pretty intense discussion on a different message board that I post at where it was Neil Young vs. David Bowie, but on this board I think Young is held in much higher regard.

so first you say pearl jam is the greatest artist ever right behind neil young and then you gotta throw bob dylan in there to make your point? just stop it. no one will ever touch bob.

and as much as pearl jam is my favorite band, you're putting them above the beatles, the who, the stones etc. as the greatest band of all time. i happen to connect with their music more too, but come on, this is just a ridiculous post.

p.s. jeff tweedy is a better songwriter than neil young, how's that to ruffle your feathers? haha.

hey i love neil too though, it's all in good fun, but you had to have expected a backlash with that reckless post.

No worries, I can take a beating ... even if it is from someone with a screen name like Tiki Barber ... Barber ruined the Giants, which is why the won the Super Bowl the following year, just to rub it in his face

I'm a huge Giants fan, not really a big Tiki fan after what happened, but what you just said is completely false... what helped them win more than anything was their defensive changes, especially with their then-new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo... The running game didn't change all that much, aside from having someone like Brandon Jacobs in the backfield instead of Tiki. He didn't ruin the Giants, he was just a douche when he left and said some shitty things about the coaching... I like to call it addition by subtraction.

Also to add to the discussion, I think Neil Young is more entertaining than Bob Dylan, I'm not about to nitpick their talents but I feel that from an entertainment standpoint, Neil Young takes the cake.

You speak of things you know not of. You don't have to look at Bob's "Greatest Hits" to find his strong lyrical performances.
From Harvest Moon's Dreaming Man: In the meadow dusk I park my Aerostar with a loaded gun and sweet dreams of you. I LOVE Neil Young, but he dates his songs with specifics. Bob's themes, symbols and imagery are universal like great literature. They transcend times and places.
I LOVE Down By the River, but you can tell me why he shot his baby? How about his nature poetry on Chrome Dreams II:
One morning when I was ridin' in my old pickup truck
A beautiful bluebird came flyin' down
My eyes caught the color as it led me down the road
Dippin' and bobbin' in the sun

Beautiful bluebird, see how she flies
Looks like she's always goin' home
If heaven had a window where the sun came shinin' through
Like a beautiful bluebird, I'd come flyin' back to you

Beautiful bluebird, see how she flies
Looks like she's always goin' home

That's not good man. Or the "hit" from that album, Ordinary People. Not a strong lyrical effort.

Go pick up the album Big Time if you haven't. It is one of Neil's jammy best and contains strong story telling.

I will agree with you that not may people have done more for music than Neil. If you are ever up late and VH1 is showing the Hall of Fame induction of Led Zeppelin, check out when Neil plays along with Jimmy Page on When the Levee Breaks. Neil shows what he could do if he had the power of Zeppelin's songs behind him. He has a mind for lead guitar playing all his own.

Tiki, you are so right about Tweedy. Tweedy is God and I bet he doesn't even know it!

thanks for the support. it gets annoying when you have tiki barber as your screen name. it seems like i catch heat for it every other time i make a post. you have to realize that i joined the forums during tiki's last year when he was the king of new york. this was also at the time that tiki single handedly carried our struggling 8-8 team into the playoffs. giants fans all remember that washington game with over 200 yards rushing and 2 td's to secure the wild card. giants fans loved tiki including myself for what he did for our team. during his career tiki, strahan, and toomer were really the only consistent players we had. i used his name as a tribute and then about 6 months later he started running his mouth and acting like a douche bag. i lost a lot of respect for tiki as a person, but i will always have fond memories of his time in new york.

I don't believe you can say anyone is the greatest _______ of all time. It's all so subjective. Yes Neil is great, so is Dylan and many many many other song writers. Whose to say one is better than the other?

You couldnt be more wrong. The only thing that I love more than Pearl Jam is the New York Football Giatns, I have season tix. Tiki Barbers departure allowed the Giants to win (although their defense was a big help). The reason I say this is because Tiki got 65% of the offensive touches the previous three years. As an example in the 2007-2008 playoffs when they played the Panthers, the panthers shut Tiki down and the Giants lost because they had no other offensive option to go to. Tiki brought the Giants to the playoffs but he was the reason they could not win a playoff game either later in his career because everyone knew who was getting the ball. When he left it allowed the Giants to become a more effective offensive since they could now spread the ball around. End.

you make some valid points, but yeah, lets not argue about tiki, that's a whole different issue. at least you're a giants fan, and a pearl jam fan obviously. you're a good man in my book, even if you think neil is better than dylan.

I definitely agree that Neil is better than Bob, but PJ is nowhere near the greatest artist ever ;)
