I kind of took this thread to mean "modern" as in on the radio now. Hence my Paramore call.

I dunno if I've actually heard a good band on mainstream radio lately, but when a band plays a major late night talk show or SNL, I consider them mainstream, esp in this day and age.
  • I have a feeling not a lot of people in here will agree but i love Mudvaynes first two albums L.D. 50 and The End of All Things to Come. After these albums they went down hill but i think these first two albums are very good.

    The Dead Weather.

Saw them a couple of weeks ago and the show was AMAZING. I got the album, am loving it and listening to it nonstop, but I've got to say the live show was on a whole new level. The small venue sure helped, so I'm gonna say see them now while they're still relatively unknown. I was very impressed by how versatile these guys are; none of them played a single instrument throughout the whole set!! They are definitely worth your time and money.

I stopped listening to the radio, stopped listening to my local "alt/modern rock" station in 2003. Are there any bands that are in this category that are any good?

People seem to love bands like Shinedown, or Three Days Grace. I have only heard a few songs from both.

When you turn on your local alt rock station, what are the new bands that you hear? Do you like any of it?

    Relentless7 (What? They're new, aren't they?)
    Cage The Elephant
    Dead Weather
    Manchester Orchestra

I have L.D. 50 and it's probably one of the most interesting metla albums I own...I like it a lot. I love the song 'Death Blooms'

They may be from the mid 90's, I dunno...but they're still kicking and considered "modern".

Gomez has also been around since the mid 90's. Cat Power is another one who is modern and has been around since the mid 90's.

So is PJ ;). It's all relevant. And yes, Andrew Bird's show...haven't seen it, but I've heard good things.

    I'm digging cage the elephant

Ah yes, I'm digging some of their stuff too. For some reason the lazy almost-rapping style of singing reminds me of early Beck.

    my thoughts exactly!

I'll throw my hat in this ring. And as good as their CD is, they are 10x better live, tons of fun ... total ass shakin' show.

Lots of Dead Weather comments in here ... I dig them. One band y'all need to check out is The Kills. It's Alison Mosshart (Dead Weather vocalist) other band. They're fucking tight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKj24GeaeRM

OP stated since 2003 and I looked through this thread and did not see on mention of Broken Social Scene ... their album "You Forgot it in People" is one of my favorite 5 albums from this decade. This isn't off that album, just another fine example of how great they are ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uev2J_cBHjQ

Also, I've raved about them a ton ... The Duke Spirit ... striaght forward kick you in the teeth rock with some haunting ballads mixed in ... Leila Moss, such a fine singer ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrwtxW1h76I

10 more off the top of my head I'll toss out ....

    Doves
    My Brightest Diamond
    Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
    Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
    DeVotchKa
    Interpol
    Arcade Fire
    The Decemberists
    stellastarr*
    British Sea Power

oh, and let me add this ... if you want to listen to good indie rock, commercial free (99% talk free) ...

    somafm.com

check out their Indie Pop Rocks station ... it's where I find out about a ton of new bands ...

you all are straying too far from the point of the original post..

he didn't ask you to blurt out as many indie rock bands that you can rattle off in a minute, he was asking if there are still any good modern rock bands that get played on commercial radio.

No, there isn't really any "good" new rock bands on the radio anymore. It's pretty much tasteless.

And we've all answered the best that we could, which is by mentioning good modern rock bands that may not get as much commerical airplay.

well, I posted that I don't listen to alt rock radio stations ... but posted the station I do listen to to hear good alt rock.

And note the thread title ... "Are any of the new modern rock bands any good?" .... many people are answering that.

Dredg - truly one of the most underrated art rock bands...and their live shows are truly uplifting

Black Stone Cherry - a great enthusiastic southern rock band

    Alter Bridge - great performers,

Mastodon - maybe the greatest metal band right now

and sorry but I can't really repeat the greatness of MUSE

Commerical radio in my area sucks! Thank God for WXPN broadcasting outside of Philly.

I would say there is no good new "modern rock" that is safe for corporate radio. I believe it was Trent Reznor that sang 'Bow Down To The One's You Serve". It's a shame radio believes they serve the advertiser and not the listener.

Lately I've been listening to the following....

    The Dead Weather
    Heartless Bastards
    The Black Angels
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears
    Celebration
    Drive By Truckers/Patterson Hood
    Derek Trucks Band
    Fever Ray
    Florence + The Machine
    Ryan Bingham
    TV On The Radio
    Cold War Kids
    The Walkmen

I know this list isn't Modern Rock as played on the radio, but it is current to me and is what is played on my Modern Rock Cd/Mp3 player...
If there were no Angels would there be no sin?
