Are any of the new modern rock bands any good?

I stopped listening to the radio, stopped listening to my local "alt/modern rock" station in 2003. Are there any bands that are in this category that are any good?

People seem to love bands like Shinedown, or Three Days Grace. I have only heard a few songs from both.

When you turn on your local alt rock station, what are the new bands that you hear? Do you like any of it?

I can't stand Shinedown or 3 Days Grace they're just so average and stale. Anyway I've really gotten into The Whigs, saw them open for Kings of Leon a couple of times and caught one of their own, smaller shows. Really energetic live show with a great raw sound, definitely worth checking out I'd say. They seem to get some airplay here in Philly.

The only band I like that fall into that category are probably Alter Bridge, I know there's the whole Creed connection, but Myles Kennedy is one of the best singers out there

What Shinedown did to "Simple Man" was just pure torture and uncalled for. The other songs of theirs I've heard are good melodically, but with the dryest, dumbest lyrics i've heard in quite a while. Some song about haley's comet, just terrible.
Three Days Grace are pretty descent, fans of Pearl Jam too.

There are many great new rock bands, but I guess you have to define your question a bit better. Any new bands that play on your typical "new rock" format in the US? Hell if I know. I gave up listening to those type stations around the same time you did. My three main sources for new rock bands are either here, friends, or Rolling Stone magazine. I don't take everything RS says as gospel, but they have guided me to some of my favorite "new" bands.

Oh yes! Saw them supporting Springsteen a few weeks back and they were brilliant. Plus the singer is a big Pearl Jam fan, which makes them that much better!! I think their song Even Cowgirls Get The Blues has a bit of a PJ sound to it. Here's a link for those who haven't heard it:

So are we just talking radio play? I’d have to go with Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle then. but there’s tons of ‘new’ bands out there that don’t get played. A lot have already been mentioned on here.

IMO radio these days is known as nickleback/shinedown era. It all sounds the same to me. the most original ‘radio’ band to breakout recently was System of a Down.

Ah yes, I'm digging some of their stuff too. For some reason the lazy almost-rapping style of singing reminds me of early Beck.

The Dead Weather/Raconteurs, the Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, Silversun Pickups. I dig Umphrey's McGee a lot. I've also heard good things about the Black Lips and the Whigs.

Wikipedia says Gaslight Anthem did a cover of State Of Love & Trust. Edit: And it's here.

As far as bands that have a "modern rock" sound (or what I call nu metal) the only two I can get in to is Cold and Apocalyptica.

I don't know if you'd consider Cold new since they reached their zenith in '05-'06, and have since broken up, but their sound fits into the modern rock / nu metal category. They get bonus points for their singer, Scooter (now that's a real metal name!), who's voice is really amazing. Their last album, "A different Kind of Pain", is probably their best, but "Year of the Spider" is also really good.

Apocalyptica is cool because they pull off the seemingly impossible task of being a modern metal band and still have an original sound. Instead of a singer they have a violin player who plays the melody line that a vocalist would sing. On the few songs that does have vocals they use singers from other bands, so the songs have a different sound to them. I really like their first single, "I Don't Care". Both bands are at least worth checking out.

I've also got to second the vote for The Airbone Toxic Event, but I don't know if I'd consider them modern rock. To me they have a more college rock, indie sound. Regardless of how you categorize them though, they're good.

I try not to listen to radio unless neccesary. In this case i've had KROQ on for a good while this past week to hear the Fixer when played.

That new song by the band Paramore is pretty bitching. I think it's called Ignorance
    very tight rock track

3 Days Grace kills me. That guys lyrics sound very high school goth to me and the music is stale

Reminds me of generic Sublime, not that Sublime was amazing.

    Some decent rock bands?????/

The Mars Volta-their new album is their most accessible.... If you've tried them before and didn't like, give Octahedron a chance

Mastodon- Crack the Skye is the best mainstream metal album since Lateralus.

Dr. Dog- Fate is damn good for somethin a little more old school

TV on the Radio- if you like a little ass shakin, Science is great, pretty diverse album.

Alot of the bands I've seen mentioned in this thread are modern day Candlebox's and Billy Squiers.

I kind of took this thread to mean "modern" as in on the radio now. Hence my Paramore call.

There are hundreds of great rock bands out there otherwise and i'm pretty sure there is a thread or 8 for that as well
