Ed & Mike Chat With Radio About “The Fixer”

A couple of nice radio phone interviews aired Monday in support of “The Fixer.”
Ed Ved spoke from Seattle to BBC DJ Zane Lowe, calling in a bit behind schedule. Regarding making “Backspacer”, Ed said the process was “easier and quicker” than in the past, adding that oftentimes ”songs are like children” in that they are “cute…pure when they come out, and grow up to be difficult to control…stubborn” and “insolent.” Ed mentioned that recording the latest album was “less of a science project and more like flowers blooming”, that the process was easier, attributing that to being “around long enough to communicate well.” He added that during recording the band were “excited to get down to business and not think about it too much.”
Regarding the upcoming tour, when asked about being in rehearsals Ed laughed and said there would be none and that “we know what we’re doin’, we’ll be alright. I’d rather spend time out on the water.”
The interview is currently streaming on the BBC website iPlayer here, and Ed’s interview starts at the 33:55 mark.
Also on Monday, most frequently interviewed band member Mike McCready called from Seattle to talk to San Diego DJ Halloran on station FM 94.9 KBZT. Mike played DJ for a chunk of time, talking between songs about the new record and was very forthcoming!
Halloran asked Mike if the band had stopped being angry, that “The Fixer” seems like an upbeat three minute pop song. Mike replied that “we’re less angry… you can only have anger so long until you turn it into something positive.” What has the boys feeling so positive? “A little thing called President Barack Obama.”
Mike tells us that “The Fixer” was written by Matt Cameron, and the band all arranged it. Mike guessed the song was written about a year ago, and that Matt had the song before they went into the studio. Regarding the songwriting mix on “Backspacer”, Mike says “Ed has a few, Jeff has a couple, Stone has one, I have one” and that a total of 22 songs were recorded. The recording process involved the band bringing in songs, figuring out “which ones Ed is into since he’s singing on them” and then going from there.
It was exciting to hear Mike say that a Pearl Jam EP might hit the marketplace in 6 months time or so to showcase some of the other songs not on the album, and that Mike himself is working on songs right now for his own upcoming solo release on the horizon!
Songs Mike played were “Gut Feeling” - Devo, “The Passenger” - Iggy Pop, “California Uber Alles” - Dead Kennedys, “Redemption Song” - Bob Marley, “Kids” - MGMT, “The Ocean” - Led Zeppelin, “Fake Plastic Trees” - Radiohead and “Reach For The Skies” - Social Distortion.
Neat and new-to-us website GrungeReport.net was gracious enough to edit down the interview to just Mike talking, and is hosting an mp3 of that edit on the site here. Very nice!

but really...
Have I well understood? a Pearl Jam EP ???
mike said they have 22 recorded and may release an ep in 6 months...the band says a lot of things
I hope we both understood correctly, an EP would be amazing, no more hoping/begging for B-sides, and 22 songs in 6 months?
THAT'S true. But I hope they follow through with one.

So, for all the complainers of how short this album is, they may be releasing a follow up EP six months later.. perhaps a sequal to Backspacer.. I also heard Ed was in the middle of writing a song in a recent interview, perhaps for the follow up EP.. Can't wait to hear all the new songs! Not one I don't like so far.
It would be funny... 6 song EP that lasts as long as Backspacer!
Haha I had the same thought ...
love that Mike decided to play Gut Feeling after all the "they stole Devo's song" talk after we first heard Got Some ... quite the sense of humor.
mmm, Social D ... very nice.

I wish one of these interviewers had asked Ed or Mike if the band is going to tour in 2010.
Hopefully, if it's something that the band has committed to, they already have firm plans in place. It just seems that with Backspacer hitting in September, an upcoming tour and the planned re-release of their back-catalogue, unless plans for this EP are firm (ie marketing, artwork, production, etc) it could very easily disappear under the weight of the rest of their commitments.
They were crushed and dying in the dirt.
We tried to pick up the pieces,
And get away without getting hurt,
But they caught us at the state line,
And burned our cars in one last fight,
And left us running burned and blind,
Chasing something in the night.
