Just wanted to put this out there - at first, I thought it was average. Then I thought it was below average, then back to average again, and now - I freakin' love this song! I can't wait to go see the guys, jump up and down while screaming "FIGHT TO GET IT BACK AGAIN!". Just wanted to share that, who's with me? :D

    "The Fixer" is definately catchy.
But not nearly as catchy as "The Super Bowl Shuffle" :)

I do enjoy it. I think I will like it even more when I hear it in the context of the album... I don't think the lyrics are horrible, just simple... Simple is ok with me... and I love the instrumentation on the track... especially before the bridge.... it's unlike anything they've done before.

Also I'm pretty sure the track is loaded with cowbell.

Don't confuse 'simple' with 'silly', Einat! I have a feeling Eddie will sing this one with a smile on, and I can't wait to see it.

I must say that I like the bridge, but do not like how they enter into the bridge. It sounds like something out of a Disney movie.

+1.. Yes, it's cheesy in ways, but I think that just helps make it into as fun of a song as it is! Has anyone heard it on the radio - any difference between that and the one streaming on myspace?

I agree that it scores points for the fact that they've never done that before... BUT, I can actually picture Hannah Montana singing this song. SERIOUSLY. Would it not fit perfectly in her catalog?

totally agree love the song but i'm confused by the intro to the bridge. but the more i listen to it the less i notice it.

  • I really like the shift toward minimalist-type lyrics thus far on Backspacer. Got Some and The Fixer both see Ed not trying to say too much in one song, which is kind of new for him. Obviously Ed can balance very complicated concepts and images and make a song work awesomely, but it's nice to see him completely strip everything down to its rawest form. Love the new shit!!

i disagree but I have NO doubt that Kelly Clarkson would KILL this song. since you've been gone and the fixer are both awesome songs. i couldn't be more serious

I think there's so much to this song actually, despite its simple appearance. The fact that my opinion on it has changed so radically since I heard it for my first time proves that for me.

I'm really loving it too...I've thought "Down" and "undone" were 2 of their best songs over the last 6 or 7 years, and this song seems to have the same "hope" that they did. I'm really, really, liking it.
I am right by your side...

    I like it.

I dont think its cheesy. Or simple. Some of the best songs have very little writing.

Loot at the lyrics to Animal. There are hardly any lyrics at all.

I dont see this song as much different as WWS, Betterman, Daughter, or anything off of Ten in terms of Radio friendly. Its definitely radio friendly, and that is a bad thing?

I like it, probably prefer Got Some, at this point...cant wait to hear that studio version.

I agree...I thought it was more like Down than anything else....in terms of sound, that is.

I agree with you. And I didn't mean to imply that the song was simple. There is a difference between simple and minimalist.

That makes sense. Have you read the wikipedia article about The Avocado album? It states that Ed wrote four different sets of lyrics for each song! That's got to be very draining for a writer....

I took these two quotes from wiki.

McCready said, "I'd sum it up as kind of a tight, concise, rock ’n’ roll record with kind of pop or maybe new wave elements to it...It’s a really quick record, but I like that element to it. I like the sparseness of the songs and the way that Brendan pulled us together and made us play as good as we could."

Vedder also stated, "I've tried, over the years, to be hopeful in the lyrics, and I think that's going to be easier now."

Sonds to me like the Fixer and Got Some are right on target for what they were hoping to achieve. Concise, pop, new wave, quick, hopeful...
we're all going to the same place...
