Look people.........Fixer/TARGET related

edited July 2009 in The Porch
If this is the song they created for the TARGET commercial, which is my understanding, then that's what it is perfectly suited for...stop and think of every single TARGET commercial with music in it..quick, poppy, slick and really glossy overall...I'm sure the song will fucking smoke live, as Pearl Jam songs always do....Ed writes FANTASTIC songs for whatever the occasion...Into the Wild, Dead Man Walking, and now his TARGET assignment....he is REALLY gifted and the song serves the assignment...just because they are famous, incredibly wealthy musicians, does not mean that they do not have JOBS and with every JOB, there are elements that NEED to be performed...PJ haven't enjoyed massive, chart-topping record sales for many years and I, for one, do not blame them a bit for making an effort and stretching their collective legs in terms of trying to do something about it...

If you are good at something, never do it for free

SELLOUT was in my vocabulary for about a week when I was 22 and BROKE AS HELL

Thanks for reading and enjoy the new music from the best band in the world

I see your angle on this, but knowing you are doing this thing with TARGET, you will undoubtedly shape something to fit the mold............

What about creating a song for a movie?

Nowadays a movie is practically a two hour commercial if you factor all the HEAVY product placement

    Movies are promoted and hyped....

They definately wrote it with their grand scheme in mind...a song to fit the mold of their game plan...if you cannot see that, then there's not much else to say..............

but the song was written long before the target thing came up, they had an album and then target came along and said "we want a song for a commercial" then one of the band went "well the fixer is are catchiest song on the album use that" and target was like "thank you very much" and then the band were like "bye now"

Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you were in the room with their management team during all this...I'm sure you are right, Pearl jam is a last minute, fly by the seat organization that doesn't plan out every single move, their business plan is more Zen-like and flows like a river...they just "ride the wave where it takes" them...

maybe i am their manager.......... oh wait my picture kinda gives that one away...... anyway you dont write music with a commercial in mind, like you dont plan a single and all that until All the music has been written. it just wouldnt make sense. if it was for a commercial you could hear it in the lyrics and theres no real references in the song

Movies or films are a lot more of an art form than a commercial though. Commercials don't have the meaning, lessons, and messages that films have, or the production.

Okay, not that it isn't fun for me to be a sarcastic prick all day, but obviously, they didn't write it to match the visuals of the project as they would for a feature film, but they had to have a really glossy pop tune to satisfy the TARGET deal.that is what I am saying.I am not trying to insinuate that they were shown a commercial concept and then wrote a song just for that.........I do enjoy the back and forth though.just gets tiresome to hear so many "fans" bash the new music......I mean Hell, it's NEW music people!!!! Be happy!!!! :)

You were supposed to be able to get a cd copy of one of their 98 Australia shows if you bought Single Video Theory, but they pulled it at the last minute because I don't think they ever actually got the band's permission. Everyone got to pick another free CD that day... I got Rust Never Sleeps :)

I have no idea which came first (so this is purely my opinion), but I seriously doubt PJ "wrote" a song for a Target Ad. I just don't see it. I could see where they might have some material that they had worked on, and sort of said, you know this might be a good fit, lets finish it, or change it a bit.

No way they wrote a song with Target in mind. Just don't see it.

Yeah, they did and I have the best buy freebie CD that no one was supposed to get... :)

Amazing thread. Truly amazing. I guess the Beatles wrote "Hello Goodbye" for Target too...

they did a commercial for yeild but i'm pretty certain it was not for best buy. if it was, they did not have a "deal" with them to ONLY sell their record at BB.

but now that we are on the subject, since they did make a commercial for the Yeild launch, does the OP think that some of the songs there were written with the commercial in mind?

some of the things that come up on this board blows my mind.

Precisely my point......a lot of skimming going on instead of reading, or maybe I'm not being clear enough.....I have been guilty of that, to be sure ;)

Ok, well last night was the first show of their tour and after the introduction of the band was done Jerry said "and WE ARE ALICE IN CHAINS"

So your wrong again becuase it's Jerry's band more than it will ever be yours, so what he says goes i think. Just open your mind and stop being just so.....erm.... stupid?

oh yeah dont worry im not angry or anything, i just still dont think they wrote a poppy song just for target, i mean this is pearl jam!! Satans Bed is about heiresses being stuck up, not for you is about the music being for the fans and not the record company, corduroy is about ed's jacket he got for a fiver and they were selling for over 100 dollars after the "grunge Explosion" i just dont see them complying like that i think the whole album will be alot more poppy than people are expecting
