although I do agree that the national are a great american band and one of my favorites. I don't think the PJ crowd would go for them. PJ crowds have had a history of panning indie type bands.

I mean people didn't like Sonic Youth in 2006, Sleater-Kinney and I remember when Johnny Marr opened for PJ in 2003 no one even knew who he was (and he is an absolute guitar legend).

So for now I'm afraid PJ will open with more obvious bands like KOL and Ben Harpre and the Relentless 7.. i love MMJ and would be great to see them open again but Jim James is busy with a couple of projects other than MMJ. The Hold Steady would fir PJ a lot better.
I'm just flying around the other side of the world to say I love you

I love you forever and forever :)

The National are NOT Sonic Youth or even Sleater Kinney... Sonic Youth was a lost cause, they're way too weird for the PJ fanbase, and Sleater Kinney had that incredibly divisive female vocalist. I LOVE the Hold Steady but I think they would be loathed by the people around here that would bitch endlessly about Craig's vocals, just as they did for S-K. I think the National would go over pretty well... I saw them open for REM last summer and I've never seen an opener get as strong a positive reaction as they did. They're much closer to the KoL/MMJ mold than the Hold Steady.

I too saw the national open for R.E.M. but I just don't think they would work for a PJ audience. Unless it's Bruce opening there will be bitching either way :D

No doubt. But I don't think there's an opposition to indie bands... you have to remember both MMJ and KoL WERE indie at the time they opened. The National is more like Interpol than anything, and I have no idea how well they went over. I think they'd be generally better received than most bands would.

My other suggestion would be Gaslight Anthem... they'd be perfect. PJ fans, Bruce inspired... what could go wrong?

put on a slow, dumb show for you
    and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain

LOVE the National. IMO they were FAR superior to Modest Mouse when opening for REM. The Hold Steady is one of my favorite bands but opening isn't for them. They operate on the crowd's energy and seeing them open two shows for DMB was painful as I have seen them headline and they're a terrific live band. The Gaslight Anthem would be good. Would they dare to cover SOLAT?

Dunno, but a live version appeared as the B Side on the recent re-issue of The 59 Sound single.

The National are one of my favorite bands, but why put this in the Porch?

Lets have everyone make a subject title for bands they like "(Insert Name) should open for Pearl Jam" so that we can overrun the Pearl Jam forum. That would be really constructive!

This should be in "Other Music".

    I would fully support this.
