Why must radio wait until Monday to play The Fixer?

I am just wondering. Obviously radio stations don't get mail on Sunday, so they will have to receive the single by at least Saturday (unless of course radio stations have done away with cd's and then this doesn't matter as I guess the band or record label could just email it out Monday morning), so why do they have to wait until Monday? Especially since Pearl Jam is no longer on a label, meaning no big group of fancy lawyers, but what is the worst that could happen?

"Damn you, you played this song because you were excited about it and wanted to share it with your audience and now they might like it and buy our record!"

I mean, how else is a band supposed to respond?
words seem so out of place.

It was probably scheduled weeks or months ago. They want all radio stations to release it at once. They could have said Sunday just as easily as next Thursday. It's just a date.

Well know it is just a date, but what is keeping one, or multiple radio stations from saying, "we have it now, let's just play it." Is there just some sort of honor code between radio and bands?

well i presume pj's lawyers would hit down on them like a ton of bricks. Just cos they're not on label now doesn't mean they don't have a big legal team or whatever. Pearl Jam are a business!!! Pearl Jam want the song to be released simultaneously without a low quality leak fucking up their plan so if radio plays it first they get sued.
or so i imagine. I am no expert. Lordy

Did they ever say whether/when the song will be available here and/or Itunes? Hoping to own it Monday.

i think it is good that they wait until monday, because days like today we can hardly wait...and it builds up the suspense. the whole US will be exposed to it on monday and i think that is a better marketing strategy than a rollout.

A potential lawsuit is probably keeping radio stations from playing it.

PJ came up with a date that THEY wanted it released. For all radio stations and other media to contact each other to see if they have the music already would take a lot of needless time, and it's not their call anyway.

PJ is allowed to give specific instruction on how they want to be promoted, particularly in advance of a release. If the album had already been released lets say last week, PJ would probably not be able to control the radio play as much. Instead of a trickle of station by station releasing it slowly, PJ probably wants a big boost all at one time - and it's their right to tell the stations what date they want. Seems pretty simple to me.

I don't see a radio station risking a law suit or anything just to play a single a couple of days early. It's not like they're running out of things to play anyway.

I would bet all the money in my pocket that if a radio station played The Fixer today, they would get a cease and desist letter from PJ's lawyers. And if they played it again, PJ would proceed with getting serious with them... plus they would be shooting themselves in the foot for future PJ releases.

Listening to a local station here in Vancouver today . . . the DJ said he has heard the single and it definitely has potential to be big! He also said that they are forbidden from playing it before noon on Monday
