Coldplay tour question

I see that Coldplay is covering Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and that's pretty cool. I'm seeing them in Mansfield this August and can't wait.

Question: How come they don't play Speed of Sound much live and for those who have heard it, is the acoustic version they sometimes do any good?

Cheers!

I saw CP on July 10th at the Amphitheater in Ridgefield, Washington. Don't know the answer to the "Speed Of Sound" question, since they didn't play it. They did do a loose cover of Billie Jean during one of their two "platform in the audience" sessions. It was actually pretty cool.

As a side note, I've never been more than a slightly casual fan of the group, but their live show this year is absolutely incredible! The band has more substance than I ever gave them credit for. Highly recommended, and my apologies to the CP haters on the board for speaking such treason! ;)
"Hello Oregonians. Hello Washingtonians. Hello Portland..where the fuck are we? We're in Ridgefield!"
  • When the tour started last summer, their were several songs in the setlist that got moved around some. Speed Of Sound was electric, then they tried it acoustic, then it disappeared for good.

And I agree, I'm not the biggest fan of their albums but their live show is amazing.

thank you all for the responses.

I was not a big fan of CP until Vida came out and then the Grammys show. Lost and Vida were incredible on the Grammys. I'm hearing more and more that their original live shows 5 years ago were just okay but the past 2 years have been off the hook. That special on 60 minutes was really cool too. I guess my top 10 CP songs right now are:

    1) Vida
    2) In My Place
    3) Speed of Sound
    4) Life in Technicolor
    5) Clocks
    6) Lost
    7) Yellow
    8) Scientist
    9) Lovers in Japan
    10) Talk

    Coldplay are the anti-Pearl Jam!!

They are such a terrible band...and Chris Martin is a terrible singer and a total arse with it.

    F**k Coldplay!

    Indifference71: You rocking the lawn?

I'd love to see the glove. :) Well...if I can see from way back there. One Dave show it was too windy so they didn't put the screens up...couldn't see a thing. I don't remember much of that show..but that didn't have much to do with the view.

I've got a bunch of friends going down for Dave this weekend...always an adventure..

I'm kind of interrrupting here, but I saw Coldplay last Friday. I just wanted to say that I don't recall the lights being yellow, but they did drop maybe 10 of these HUGE ASS yellow balloons that were probably 3-4 feet in diameter.

Someone else asked about the Billie Jean cover. It was one of the more stripped-down songs, pretty simple which was neat when the entire crowd was singing along. I didn't notice a glove though, but I had been drinking so I suppose it's possible.

I really did! I would not classify myself as anything more than a casual fan when I bought the tickets. It just seemed like a good price and a fun way to spend a Friday night outside listening to music and my sister-in-law talked me into it. :D I left thinking "WOW These guys put on a show". The sound was great their performance was great. I'd totally see them again when they come through next.

I'm not sure if this is the case for every show, but it was a really interesting and diverse crowd. I'm talking teenagers to people who I would guess were probably in their 60's or 70's. But people were really in a party mood and everyone was blanket hopping and mixing with their neighbors. I realize this doesn't have much to do with the actual show, but it certainly added to my experience.

thats a good time. I bought the tickets as an xmas present to myself with no expectations whatsoever. Hoping for a good time. I know enough songs by now that it should be kool.

I am pointing out that Coldplay are the worst band the world has ever seen and a Pearl Jam fan liking them is being a hypocrite.

Coldplay are a bunch of smug, conceited, talentless idiots who rip-off other bands all the time.

They started out as a boyband called Pektoralz in the 90s and when that didn't work out, they moved on to bland rock music.

    Awful, awful band.

I said it before and I will say it again, stop being an asshole.

Not to mention a complete moron. As if Pearl Jam are like the fucking anti-mainstream messiahs. They just shot a commercial for fucking Target.
  • I saw Coldplay at the Gorge the other day and they did indeed put on a good show. I thought Chris Martin was an entertaining front man. They would never be a band you would follow during a tour because they play the same show every night, but it was good.

that's good to hear. I go a week from Monday and am looking forward to tailgating as much as I am the concert. I've checked the setlists and they seem to have some good runs of songs, almost like a DMB concert. There are some songs in the middle that I don't care for and with the exception of Violet Hill, usually the first 6 or so songs are good. I think L.I.T. is a good way to start the show. Question: is it usually w/out vocals (Life in Technicolor) as the opener or is it the version w/lyrics?

It's usually the version without lyrics, but they sometimes play the version with lyrics as well during one of the encores.

And I'm sad that you don't like "Violet Hill" as it's one of my favorites!

It's not my least favorite to say the least, but I would rather it placed elsewhere in the setlist. I'd like a Speed of Sound in the top 5 or 6 but that's me.
