Because hundreds of people who had an equal chance of getting tickets and who were equally qualified to purchase tickets successfully recieved tickets.
I couldn't get through for Philly 2, either (made it through the CC # screen, then it told me I timed out ). Those are the breaks, though. The setup was laid out clearly in the emails -
Ten Club tickets will be sold on a first come first serve basis. We will stagger ticket sales to control web traffic, so please pay attention to the corresponding pre-sale dates and times. Pre-sale tickets are first come first serve, while supplies last.
First come, First Serve w/controlled traffic. They staggered sales for like 96 min so everyone could *try*. What more do you want them to do? They can only sell the number of tickets they're given and we all had the same chance.
I'll just make sure I'm @ a computer at 10 on Friday so I can get tickets through comcast. Not a big deal
Did anyone else get "this item is not available for purchase" for the first 7 or so minutes? That one was a first for me. It might as well have said "PC load letter" it would have made just as much sense. :?

Yep, got that from the beginning through the final min.
I can tell you that my connection is just fine and I tried for almost 2 hours to get these tickets. Also it's not like this is the first time that this has happened on presale tickets. It happens every time they go on sale.
(I am not a technology specialist)
I sympathize, but unless you are on a T1 or T3 line, your connection to your server is not as fast as your server's connection to the Internet. DSL and cable lines are notoriously slower for upload than download, and you are uploading your requests when clicking "buy", "continue", etc.
I have nearly 100% success getting 10c tickets at work (GB Ethernet to a switch to a T3 line: 44000 Kbps) and 0% success at home (Ethernet to a DSL modem: 25/15Mbps). What seems like crappy servers is really a product of the faster connections getting there first and clogging the lines... people accessing Ticketmaster have the same problems, and their servers are likely more robust.
Huh, I didnt know that about the uploading requests. Thats makes a lot of sense because I have a 10MB cable connection, but my uploadis much much slower than my DL. It supposed to be slower, but my ratio is really bad.

I clicked constantly for 30 minutes, got the "buy" button a few times, but it always led to nowhere. I had to take my kid to a swim meet and could not stick around to click forever, he ended up missing warm ups and I missed out on tickets - a lose/lose situation. I have a 20MB/20MB FIOS connection, so it's not MY internet feed that sucks.
10C is using a shitty underpowered CMS (Drupal) for their store, maybe they should save $$ and forgo the lame Christmas singles (who has a freaking record player anyway??) and put some of that money into upgrading the servers and software. Guess again. I have a crappy connection and I got tickets on my first try.
Guess again is right.. I was on a T1 trying for an hour and a half.. I did everything I could think of.. Used Internet Explorer, that wasn't getting me tix, so I tried Fire Fox, was getting the same error messages, tried combination of the two, everything I could think of, I even cleared out the cookies and started over from scratch, and still could not get night 2 tix.
i had the same exact problem as you for the 10/30 show....i kept hitting buy and it kept resending me to the same exact buy page.....but after the 5th time i scrolled up and it said that the tickets were already in my cart.....so i went to the cart and there they were so i just checked out and got the tickets....you probably had them in your cart too....its just wasnt taking you to the normal order confirmation page after you hit buy.......sorry if you didnt get tickets to the show but they were probably sitting in your checkout cart the whole time you were refreshing.....
I know it can be frustrating. I was lucky and scored Seattle tickets in under a minute. But really if they had the best servers money can buy, it would help the frustration of having to hit refresh every 2 seconds, but not that fact that more people still wouldn't get tickets.
If 5000 people try for 1000 pairs, and the site could handle 5000 people without problems, people would bitch that the tickets sold out in 8 seconds and they clicked "buy" 10 seconds in. 4 out of 5 people would still miss out.

I'm from a third world country, should I be offended???
Seriously though, I guess I was luck enough to score tickets today, but was shut out a few times, so I know how it feels. All I can say is better luck next time.
even those crapholes at ticketmaster have server problems. I think this is unavoidable when 5000 people want tickets to something in a 30 minute window
Listen people I have been all over the Us and the World to see this band. My number is 119444 and I have been buying tickets through the Ten Club for years now. I can tell you they have had problems from day 1. The server isn't big enough to handle the demand and that is sad since this is after all 2009.
As the number of Ten Club members increases the server needs to be upgraded to support the demand when it comes to buy tickets for the shows. It happened here in Spain when AC/DC anounced a few shows in the country. People went just nuts. Thousands of people queuing over night in the shops (some print tickets) and at the time of buying the tickets the server went off and the shops couldn´t handle it. I managed from work (internet and telephone) but all those people who queued over night didn´t.
Usually, these servers work ok under a normal demand. However, when millions of people try to connect at the same time they just collapse.

Exactly. It happened with ticketmaster in Spain who are supossed to be ready for this stuff.
It seems the server is sufficient with the exception of ticket sales. Maybe by staggering the on-sale times by member # or something??? If they did it that way, they could have more of a lottery system for seats since senority has already been addressed.

It has to be about demand i got tickets to Toronto no problem remember those tickets were up for hrs i was at work when those wen't on sale i didn't buy till i got home that night , it probably makes more sense to just try for tickets that are not for the big three Boston,NY,Philly ..i hope they play Cambodia soon i believe i would have better luck ...

I am sure the "server" is a new, fast, and wonderful machine... the issue is scaling, max connections allowed, how long secure connections are kept alive, and connection-to-request ratio... there are many issues that effect "access" an "success"... I wrote a rather lengthy list of factors that can decrease time and maintain the connection to the server (see http://forums.pearljam.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=103801)
Ultimately, there are few servers that can handle 10000 secure connections simultaneously, unless you go to a shared "cloud computing" format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing)

Many online transaction applications employ a 3-tiered approach... a front end application, a web-based portal and a back office database. Giant systems that handle huge amounts of online transactions, such as Amazon, ticketmaster, banking and finance systems, etc... run their tiers on seperate, high availability systems.
The Ten/VHC does not need such a system. For the most part, all its servers need to do is run the message board operations that handle a few people talking about Eddie's pants, Barack Obama being the anti-Christ or debating whether soccer is better than football. The ticket sales are the exception, not the norm.
To suggest that they invest in a powerful online transaction system for these occasional occurances in like suggesting that you buy a 24 foot flatbed truck as your basic car because once every 2 years, you need to move a bunch of stuff from here to there. Does not make any practical sense.
...
A suggestion? Maybe farm out the ticket distribution to some third party... I would suggest TicketWeb, rather than TicketMaster. They are not as fault tolerant as Ticketmaster, but they do not charge 35% to 48% (and in some cases, 70%) markup in prices. There may be some problems if multiple shows go on sale at the same time. But, feeding the shows at a regular pace would probably be okay.

I think the problem was with the Web portal getting swamped with too many connection requests. That is why you got knocked off... but, when you got back on, you were still logged on to the back end operations. The connection (initial login) was persistant. if the back end goes ka-put, you lose the login and have to go through that whole routine.
There is no need for the Ten/VHC to invest in a powerhouse system... spliting out the tiers to seperate servers, setting up fail-over systems, etc... because they are not hosting a full-time online transaction service... except, during ticket sales.
The problem with the farming out of ticket distribution is the fact that venues have specific contracts with TicketMaster. If you want to buy a ticket to the Key Arena, you have no other choice but to go to TicketMaster. That $75.75 ticket I got for L.A. for 163 a pair... will probably push 100 bucks on Saturday.
...
I don't know how to fix this thing... other than limiting us to ONE show per tour and staggering the on-sales as they did.

Unlikely that TM would allow some other ticket company to sell tickets for their venues. FYI last time I checked Ticketweb is owned Ticketbastard.

I dont think they need to do one show per tour. Most of the time the ticketing works. Plus it will hurt sales in a lower demand market. Only in circumstance like this, where Philly is the only show around and common sense dictates that it will be a cluster fuck does the one ticket system need to be implemented.

Used Internet Explorer, that wasn't getting me tix, so I tried Fire Fox, was getting the same error messages, tried combination of the two, everything I could think of, I even cleared out the cookies and started over from scratch, and still could not get night 2 tix.
If 5000 people try for 1000 pairs, and the site could handle 5000 people without problems, people would bitch that the tickets sold out in 8 seconds and they clicked "buy" 10 seconds in. 4 out of 5 people would still miss out.
Exactly
Seriously though, I guess I was luck enough to score tickets today, but was shut out a few times, so I know how it feels. All I can say is better luck next time.

Now lets move on with our lives.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
Not in my opinion.
Ultimately, there are few servers that can handle 10000 secure connections simultaneously, unless you go to a shared "cloud computing" format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computing)

Hail, Hail!!!
Unlikely that TM would allow some other ticket company to sell tickets for their venues. FYI last time I checked Ticketweb is owned Ticketbastard.

I like this analogy better:
It's like putting 2,000 tickets in a pile, and letting in 10,000 people all at once to grab the tickets. There's a pile-on and some people have tickets in their hands, but cannot exit the pile-on without the tickets getting stuck in there. 2,000 people get lucky, the other 8,000 get frustrated because they "had them in their hands".
PJ should go back to "one guaranteed show per tour, per person". It was a fair system that rarely screwed people.
