Instead of shelving songs, I think Pearl Jam should walk out on stage and just stand there for a couple hours. That way, we'd still get to see the band and not have to complain about what songs they did or did not play.

Anyone who wants Pearl Jam's classic material shelved is out of their fucking mind.
Songs like Daughter and Even Flow are iconic and well-loved for a reason: because they're really fucking good.
Rarity doesn't equal quality, though it seems this is lost a great number of fans. It's as if you're ticking off a mental checklist when they play a semi-rare song, "ooh, now I can say I've seen them play Undone!". Personally, give me Even Flow every time - why? It's a BETTER SONG.
I can't remember what songs I've seen and not seen and that's the way I prefer it...this is music, not bean-counting. Just rock out, forget your checklist of what you want the band to play or think they should not play. Just hear them play whatever the hell they feel like playing and get your goddamn rocks off.
End rant. I hope they OPEN with Even Flow every night in 2009, ha.

Yes pearl jam, leave you best songs at home
Ha, yes, exactly.
Honestly, if you've seen the band 4000 times and want to complain about hearing 3999 versions of Even Flow, I don't the band is the problem. Just sayin'.
I can see that "retiring" some songs from show to show might have the benefit of making more room for other well-loved, rarely-played songs. But saying you don't want to hear them anymore is sort of killing them in your mind, whether you think it is or not. It's a little admittance that you might not care for it anymore, which is fine if you don't, but I guess I just wouldn't want that to happen to me.
Also, there might be a time in the future shows that you hear an overly-played song live which might restore your love for it.
Plus, I'm pretty sure it's the repetitive plays of the same couple PJ songs on classic rock radio stations that might be doing this to you, not live shows.
They can't shelf anything, the beauty of Pearl Jam over the years is when they tour almost every show has a different setlist. I have always loved that about them. If I get to see the in LA it could mean about 100 or so different songs!!!!! Each night about 30 or so and a few repeats of the new songs....wow...
I was starting to get sick of a lot of these songs until the first Mansfield show last year when the crowd erupted after singing the first verse of Better Man and made so much noise that Eddie couldn't even sing the rest of the song for 2 minutes....classic.
I don't mind parting with Even Flow or Crazy Mary or All Night. Not because I've heard them too many times but because I'm not a huge fan in general of them.
But I sure as hell still want to hear Daughter, Betterman and Corduroy no matter how many times you (or me) have heard them.
However, just because you have heard them a lot of times doesn't mean they should shelve them. I hate when people who see a band a large amount of times get pissed when they hear a song too many times. Either stop seeing them so much, or realize that they don't sit around before the show and say "Well so-and-so is here, and he heard Even Flow 12 out of his last 13 concerts so I guess we won't play it."

Given to Fly? Really? Wow. If you're in a good crowd, I don't understand not getting into any of these songs mentioned. I will admit to being bored by "Evenflow" at this point -- but I get that most of the crowd loves hearing it.

crazy mary is hit or miss for me. although i loved when they opened MSG2 up with it in '03... blew the place up.
My reaction exactly -- that particular song is one of the more beautiful sounds I've ever heard, ESPECIALLY the louder, live version. Hell, it's almost the reason I got into Pearl Jam. You guys are telling me it doesn't blow your balls off even just listening to the bootleg CDs? (My screen name is also from it -- HI is also for Hawaii! Yow!)
the overkill of these tunes is causing dislike. please feel free to add any others I forgot to mention-
Even Flow
Daughter
Alive
Yellow Ledbetter
Betterman
Cordoroy
seriously, on what planet would you NOT want to hear these songs for the next two tours????
i can see not playing them every show but really, shelf them for two tours?????
that's just crazy talk.
i personally look forward to hearing each and every one of these at least once or more live each tour and would be quite disappointed if they were taken out of rotation for even one tour.
jimed14, i like the diMaggio qoute
To be fair, "two tours" is only really like 10 shows.
And to the poster who suggested they put Corduroy and Daughter on the shelf I say "Booooooo".
