start and end at the beginning... the further you get into their discography the more you wonder how they sell out a full touring schedule every year

Yes I'd say start at the most recent ablums and go backwards. Pick up a few live releases along the way and you'll be hooked in no time :)

    Amen. Thank you.
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

    Under The Table and Dreaming
    Before These Crowded Streets
    Crash
    Big Whiskey
    Busted Stuff
    Everyday
    Standup

Thats how I would rank them IMO. Standup is easily their worst, dont even bother with it until you get into them after awhile. I would even say the same for Everyday, although their title song (everyday) is amazing.

Before These Crowded Streets was the album that got me into them and its still one of my favourites, so I would say start with this one, or Crash or Under The Table and Dreaming

I think Big Whiskey is also one of their best for quite a while......so to summarise my rambling - any of these 4 would be a good start :D

8-) It's hard for me to choose but this show is amazing. Love the new cd Big Whiskey, it's their best in awhile but I always love what they do...especially live. :D

Try to get a live album (Red Rocks 95, Chicago 98, Alpine 08, Saratoga 00, Hartford 00, Listener Supported) are my favorites. They're at their best live, in my opinion (and in most of their fans). Central Park & Saratoga 2000 (a Live Trax) are probably my favorite two live releases. Alpine 2008 (the new Live Trax) is probably their best glimpse of what they sound like now at their peak (and a great fucking live labum).

In terms of studio work, Before These Crowded Streets / Under The Table & Dreaming / Crash are their 'Big 3' albums (although Busted Stuff has some amazing songs when performed live). The 'Recently' EP is also amazing. You can't go wrong with any of the above mentioned albums (live or studio).

Some of my favorite songs to check out: Warehouse, Dancing Nancies, Song That Jane Likes, Tripipng Billies, Ants Marching, Typical Situation, Halloween, The Last Stop, Jimi Thing, Grey Street, Bartender, The Stone.

Yeah, Stand Up is shit. You Might Die Trying is pretty good after they reworked it live, but other than that everything off of the album is rather boring. Dave even has basically admitted it by now (they rarely perform any songs off the album live this year). Everyday has some highlights (the title track, So Right), but overall is boring compared to their other work.

One of my favorite bands to go see live. The second night at Star Lake this year was one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life (Dreaming Tree, Stone, Halloween, Song That Jane Likes, Typical Situation, Ants Marching, Two Step...). I've seen them 6 times (and hopefully more to come).

So i just listened to the Red Rocks show and now im putting on the Big Whisky CD. I'm not really digging them, i really dislike violins and saxophones tbh, its cool in may be symphonic metal but for jam bands and solo i totally dont those sounds.

On the other hand i really like the drummer and his kit sounds great! The bits with the acoustic guitar and normal guitar solos are nice.

There's a really good boot out their with Dave and Tim from Virginia from like 1993 or 94 in a coffee house where they play all the classics. I like the Luther College stuff too. Have seen DMB close to 20 times and they always put on a good show. Bartender, Best of What's Around, Typical Situation, Warehouse, #36, you can go on and on and on. Just saw them at Fenway doing new stuff...pretty cool.

Ed, start right here with this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UL_czyUro7o

I saw them supporting Springsteen a couple of months back, and they were incredible.

I agree, I don't even listen to studio DMB. I can't do it. They are that much better live.
And before his first step... He's off again...
