There's an amazing version of Deep from 91 or 92 where the music stops in the middle because Eddie jumped into the pit and started getting beaten up by security guards. When he gets back onstage, he just starts screaming at the guards while Abruzzese is rocking the backbeat to the song. When the band launches back into it, there's an amazing intensity in Ed's voice.
In terms of Porch- there's so many. Ed has some awesome tags in the Ft. Lauderdale version (don't remember what year), and I think there's a version from '94 where he tags it with Monkey Gone to Heave (Pixies) and The Real Me (The Who).
When I get home, I'll check to get the dates for these. And if you need mp3s of them, I can do that too.
Shoot me a message and I'll give you my email.
I'd have to scroll through my iPod to find the other songs, but the Black to Alive transition from the State College, PA show (5/3/03) is great. That entire show features awesome moments, but after a longer version of Black, Ed talks to the crowd and cuts off the very first note of Alive.
He talks for about a minute or so about Boom, which is funny, and then says, "I interrupted Stone, he was about to say -"
And Stone immediately jumps in with the first notes of Alive.
In my opinion you need to look to the past to find the greater live versions. As someone suggested, have a look at atlanta april 3rd 1994. Very good recording and the band is on fire! I can send you a download link if you want, send me a pm.
Prefering ten songs from 03, 06 or 08 shows to 92-93-94 shows is to me a big joke.
The only exception might be black.
Eddie's voice is sooooooo much better now than it was in the 90's. Its not even close.

I can't really say until I have time to go back and listen after work. BUT, the one I do know is Black from the Fox Theater show, Atlanta '94. I know plenty of people have already mentioned it, but it's got to be in there. Friggin ace version of the song.

Personally i love hearing some of the TEN songs without the manic intensity of the early 90s PJ. I particular love the 2000s slower & mellower version of Alive, and the re-worked Garden where the crowds sing harmonies. (as well as Black and Oceans, where his singing is usually more accurate than early 90s)
Crikey! I'm going to have to put a moratorium on the suggestions. I still have a mountain to listen to before making the selections and putting together the podcast to post next week.
Thanks to everyone for their input! I can tell already this is going to be a hard decision in choosing -- especially songs like Black, Porch, Release and Even Flow. If I don't play your suggestion, don't take it personally -- there's just way too much good stuff to choose from and I want to make sure the podcast flows, the overall sound quality is up to snuff, and the entire career of the band is represented. It'll be posted Wednesday on my site so check it out!

The Black from that show was the best I've heard and even was the one that made it onto the "Live on Two Legs" album. That's my vote!
