Bad Manners at ATM

Ok I am just wondering if it is me or do others feel this way. While waiting to use the ATM how far back do you stand? I like to be considerate and give the person using the ATM some space. I mean you stand close enough to mark your spot in line but really you don't need to stand over someone's shoulder. I just had a run in with some a**hole at the ATM...ok run in may be a strong word and I am usually pretty passive but sometimes...

I remember one time, a few years back, I was in line at an ATM (we were just getting ready to go to the bar) on campus, and my buddy dropped me off to get some cash. There was a girl right in front of me, and I stepped behind her like I would in any line, not really over her shoulder, but still right behind her. And she was getting her card, then turned around and asked me if I would back up a few steps. I did, but at first I was kind of put out, like thinking to myself "what the hell, does she think I'm trying to rob her or something?" Then I got thinking about it and realized that 1. we were on a pretty much deserted college campus at night, 2. She was a girl by herself and I was a lot bigger than her. In other words, she was just being cautious, and rightfully so. I was just so caught up in what I was doing, I didn't even think that it might bother someone else.
I walked to the ATM oblivious that anyone would ever care if someone was close behind them, but after that, now I try to give people some space.

Yeah and when I turned around to leave he hadn't even moved!! I wasn't trying to be a bitch and I am normally very polite but I just thought it was off side of him to do that. Especially now with all the worries about people skimming your ATM card and such. Not to mention just poor form not to give someone space. I mean sure when I line up to get into a GA show I realize I am giving up my right for space etc...not so at an ATM line up in the downtown business sector.

Yeah in your situ with you being a legit person that would be your first thought like "you think I am a bad guy?" like kind of wtf

I would have stood right next to that motherfucker as he did his transaction. Maybe he was too stupid to realize how uncomfortable it is to have a complete stranger so close to you as you are performing a private financial transaction on a public street. Some people are just fucking social idiots.

See, I'm pissed off for you.

  • I try to give as much room as possible. Usually at least 6 feet. On the flip side, I'll only do two transactions/balance inquiries if someone is waiting behind me. Really pisses me off when someone decides to balance their checkbook through the ATM while others are on line. :x

Yeah, that's just weird. I give people plenty of space. I wouldn't want someone standing up my ass. They can get your pin. I never had someone stand that close to me but if I did, I would ask them politely to move back some.

THANK YOU!! I know I was so pissed that it wasn't until I walked away that I was like 'd'oh why didn't I go and stand beside him?'!!!

You gotta treat it like it's a urinal.

Give the guy some space, and keep your eyes elsewhere!

Yeah I turned around and said "I am actually going to be a few more seconds here if you could move back a little bit please" so I felt that I was polite and he really should have moved. Now I will be all paranoid about him stealing my pin :?

Depending on how crowded the restroom is. Sometimes you really have no way to give the other guy room especially in a trough situation.
