I realize there is a KOL thread already, but I wanted to dedicate one to this album solely.

I dont know, but there is something about this album that is brilliant.

I love how the guitars are just so understated. Its like they mixed them lower than everything else, yet still the guitars stand out oddly enough.

The odd soundings on Closer. The loud Sex on Fire. The bombastic and melodic Use Somebody. The one two punch of Manhattan and Revelry, which oddly sound similar, but are maybe the best two songs on the damn thing.

Their sound is yearning. Yearning for something you cant have. For a past. For a new life. Desperate for a change.

It is odd, how PJ had them open for them, and then a few years later they tour with Dylan and are now I would say one of the big bands of the moment. They may not be THE biggest band in the world, but if you were to list some of those bands, I think KOL would be included.

i missed them in 03 at lollapalooza, i missed them open for U2 twice, and I am finally gonna see them aug 15th.

i like the new album, i dont love it....its not as solid as it could/should have been IMO.....i dislike revelry very much. 17 is okay and i want you let me down, BUT

notion and manhattan are incredible and the album closer, cold desert is great. i love how that songs fades out and comes back. and the first four on the album are tremendous of course.....my heart still lies with because of the times however......cant wait to finally see them.

step in the wrong direction IMO... i think their overexposure lately (gossip girls soundtrack, MTV awards, etc) is proof that this album was an intentional attempt at mainstream america... im fine with that but not at the cost of the raw, powerful music they were making before... i guess that raw quality has been gradually decreasing with each album though, so maybe im reading something more sinister into whats really a natural artistic progression... still a handful of great songs on this album and theyre still one of my favorite newer bands... just gotta keep an eye on them... hopefully they get a taste of the popularity theyre after and then turn their back on it like PJ - before their concerts are overrun with fratty types

I really try not to listen to the radio, but when I do it's one of those two fucking songs from Only By the Night, Sex on Fire or Use Somebody. I have a floor ticket to see them in L.A. in August but plan on selling it. I never liked them a lot to begin with, but now I can't stand them anymore.

I love the album. I'm only 20 so the "poppy" sound is good for me. I think every song is fantastic.

But I can see why people like their older stuff more. Their old stuff has a sort of new age The Who sound to it.

What does being 20 have to do with having the same taste in music as a 14 year old girl?
  • I dont know I like the album it just seems soulless and all sounds similar to me in comparison to the older stuff, i am not bashing on it though, i am not one of those people....

    BUT

its songs are just nothing compared to california waiting, trani, milk, slow night etc etc even because of the times was a step backward and it is still a brilliant album which is really more of a testament to their first 2.

britney spears fallout boy and all that garbage is for 14 year old girls. If you think only by the night sounds like something a 14 year old would listen to your crazy.

my 14 year old cousins all knew/enjoyed "sex on fire" at my family reunion this weekend (creepy song to play at a family reunion? yes... blame it on the shuffle)

like it or not this album is being enjoyed by jonas bros. fans (sex drenched vs. purity rings )... and the band only has themselves to blame if they dont like it

Didn't see any 14 year olds in the audience at their Halloween show... plenty of smoking hot college girls dressed like total sluts though. It was a nice change of pace from the typical scene at your average rock concert.

Yeah I meant just overall poppiness in general.

I'm admittedly way late to the KOL scene. The first time that I ever heard a song of theirs was Lolla 07 and the first and only album I own is Only By The Night.

I love OBTN but cant get into their other stuff. Dont dig it at all. Too countrified (made up a word), I cant stand southern rock. Im not into many "poppy" rock bands at all, but this album is good.

And to what someone else said, if you dig the tunes, who really cares about the rest of the fanbase. Whether its 14 year old girls or whatever.
There's a trapdoor in the sun.

Exactly. Hot college girls like them, not 14 year olds.

Only by the Night's first half is strong, but it falters considerably in its second half. Still, nowhere near as bad as some make the album out to be,
