Sonic Youth - The Vic 6/27/09

I just got back from Sonic Youth's show at The Vic. It was my first time at The Vic and I must say, I really liked the sound of that venue ( I decided to sit in the balcony since it was a G.A. show.) The performance by SY was very good. With the exception of a couple songs, they pretty much played all of The Eternals. This didn't leave much room to play their older stuff, which was fine with me, (they played for about an hour and a half). I really like The Eternals, so I enjoyed hearing all the new material. I am not quite sure if some in the crowd felt the same way because at one point someone yelled out, "Play some old stuff!" to which Thurston replied, "this is as old as it gets." Here is the setlist as I can remember:
Sacred Trickster
No Way
Poison Arrow
Calming the Snake
Tom Violence
Malibu Gas Station
Antenna
Leaky Lifeboat
Hey Joni
Anti-Orgasm
Massage the History
Pacific Coast Highway
What We Know

The opener was The Entrance Band. They're a trio from L.A.
Sonic Youth took the stage about 9:15.
Thanks, I am seeing SY tonight at Massey Hall in Toronto

I dug them. They were kind of a blues psychedelic combo. Very energetic, especially the bassist. After I got home I listened to some of their stuff on their myspace page and noticed a big difference in sound. There live show has a much more stripped down sound in comparison to their recorded stuff. Both are good.
Yeah, just look up The Entrance Band on myspace. They have a couple songs loaded up on their page. As far as the length of the Sonic Youth set goes, I agree. I wish they would have played longer. With 16 albums plus all of the B-sides and rarities, they could easily do 2 hours. But, I'm willing to bet with all of the intricate tunings and whatnot it's much harder to bust into a song that was not pre-determined.
