Are the days of midnight releases of albums over?

Back in the day, record stores used to open at midnight for big album releases, albums that people typically couldnt buy until when the store opened the next day.

You never hear of this anymore. We all know the reason.

That said, it is sort of sad in a way. One of the things that made In Rainbows so cool, was the fact that anyone who had a internet connection, was getting to hear the album at the exact same time as everyone else.

These days it seems albums leak very early, months in advance. So the idea of everyone getting to hear the album at a designated time or whatever never happens.

Who wants to go stand in line for a record, when you can download it online at home?

I haven't bought a midnight release since 2001. I would still go even if it was available online.

I asked the clerk at my local record shop about midnight releases, and he said the last one they did was about 2 albums back from Korn and only 3 or 4 people showed up. Everyone prefers to download the music months in advance than share the experience with like-minded fans and possible meet new people.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

Not sure if they still do it, but a local store was ALWAYS open until midnight EVERY Monday night.

I remember going there to get Riot Act when that was released. That was the only time I've ever done the midnight thing.

I should find out if they still do that.

I remember waiting in line at midnight to by VS. We waited about an hour. It was a blast. Camping out for concert tickets was fun too. Almost as much fun as the show.

brought back a lot of memories of buying albums, waiting in line for tix, etc. that irving plaza gig was the *cheapest* big show act i've ever attended. cost me a lot of time...but the price of a CD for entry? fantastic. 8-)8-)8-)
    Stay with me...
