Anyone involved in that scene in the UK in the 90's?

Were you/Are you a fan of Oasis/Pulp/Blur etc...?

Was Britpop a scene that rivaled grunge in its intensity?

I remember a quote from Thom Yorke and how once he heard either Wonderwall or Champagne Supernova, Radiohead decided to go for the crazy outthere and experimental sounds as opposed to the more generic rock they had been playing prior. At first I thought it was a compliment, that Thom was inspired after hearing Oasis to create some new sounds, but now that i think of it, maybe it was a bit of a slam. he couldnt stand making music like Oasis or Blur so he decided to create some really off the wall stuff.

Thoughts on Britpop?

Mid- nineties Britpop was a media wankfest. The media hype in the UK was far more noisy than the rumblings over the US-imported "grunge" bandwagon. Other than that, it was all a bit silly, and not really much to do with music. You saw a few people from the south of England saying "Mad fer it" and "Tops" for a few weeks and supporting Manchester City, but nah, it sold a few Ben Sherman shirts and that was about the size of it. Oh, and a couple of posh journo girls wrote in broadsheets about how they'd like to shag Liam Gallagher. The likes of Jeff Buckley could come over and play tiny venues in the UK at the time, and no-one would give two shits.

"Intense" is a bizarre adjective to use about Britpop. I think the late-eighties Madchester scene was pretty intense, though, but that might have had as much to do with the drugs going around as the music.

    supergrass are for sure

I dont think arctic monkeys are though. They are indie rock, as far as I can tell.

But britpop to me means bands like Oasis, Pulp, Blur, Supergrass, Elastica, etc... bands who hit it big in the early 90's and who died out in 1997 or so when Oasis released Be Here Now.

Britpop as I understand it was a reaction to having american culture shoved down their throats for decades, and their reaction to the grunge scene. They wanted a scene that reflected British culture.
